Prime Minister Gordon Brown has condemned as ‘outrageous’ the terrorist attacks that have taken place in Mumbai over the past twenty four hours and has pledged to help UK citizens caught up in the violence.
To date seven Britons have been reported as having been injured in the attacks and High Commissioner Sir Richard Stagg has told the BBC he fears that number may grow as Indian security forces battle to regain control of the situation. Speaking to the BBC Mr Brown said ‘ I have sent a message to Prime Minister Singh that the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />UK stands solidly with his government as they respond and to offer all necessary help.’ Foreign Secretary David Milliband has called the attacks a terrible reminder of the threat posed by extremists and said ‘Our thoughts are with the families of those who have been killed or injured.’ Leaders of the UK’s two main opposition parties have also spoken out in support of the Indian government in the wake of the attacks. Conservative leader David Cameron said his thoughts were with those caught up in the attacks and that ‘India and Britain stand together at this time in the face of terrorism.’ Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said that ‘when violent terrorism raises its ugly head it is crucial that the international community stands together,’ and that the close ties between Britain and India, rightfully, prompted ‘a strong signal of support for the Indian government.’ http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7751863.stm The England cricket team has called off the one day match scheduled to take place in Mumbai in December. Hugh Morris, Managing Director of the England Cricket Board said ‘The safety and security of the team is of the utmost importance to the ECB.’ England are still set to play in a three day match beginning on 5th December and in the first test scheduled for 11th December. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/7751756.stm
