The Monument Avenue 10K Race Took Place Saturday March 27 and it Was An Exciting Day in Richmond Virginia

Almost 40,000 runners and walkers of all levels and ages took part in the Monument Avenue 10K event on Saturday March 27 and according to the Richmond Times, the total numbers were 37,265 for the 10K race and 2,016 took part in the First Market Mile Kids Run.

The weather was not ideal as it was a cold one, but that did not put the runners off their game and the 10K was an exciting and a competitive one.

The winner for the men's division was Alene Reta from Ethiopia and his final time was 28:26 for the 6.2 mile race. Kumsa Adunga, also from Ethiopia took second place and he was 52 seconds behind Reta. Reta was the runner-up in last year's race and came back this year to blast away the competition.

The women's race was a closer one, with Megan Wright and Samia Akbar neck and neck for most of the way. In the last 500 yards, Wright just managed to pull away from Akbar and crossed the finish line just 13 seconds ahead. She finished the race in 33:06.

Jessica Smith was really the first person to cross the finish line as she was the winner of the AT&T Dash for the Cash and she was given a 2.64 mile head start. When she crossed the line first, she received $2,500 in prize money.

It was a successful Monument Avenue 10K race.

Some came to run. Others came to enjoy the street carnival atmosphere for which the event is so well known. None was disappointed.
