Some UN staffer involved in Congo mission are reportedly missing after their small plane disappeared on the way to Congo.

A small plane believed to be carrying United Nations staffers did not land as scheduled on Monday in the Democratic Republic of Congo and officials were unsure of its whereabouts, UN sources said.

The Air Serve plane has the capacity to transport 19 passengers and was to travel a route that links the capital Kinshasa with the country's east. It was being expected in the eastern city of Bukavu.

"We don't know how many people were on board," said one of the UN sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. "It seems that it neither landed in Bujumbura (capital of neighbouring Burundi) nor Goma (another eastern city in the DR Congo)," the source said.

Members of the UN mission in the DR Congo were believed to be among the passengers. Air Serve could not be immediately reached for comment.

Update: the Globe and Mail published this morning that a Canadian UN aid worker from Quebec named Richard Ferland was among the 17 dead.  His age and hometown have not been released.  Other victims included five staff members of the United Nations Development Program and two from the UN Office of Co-ordination Humanitarian Affairs.
