UN Chief deeply concerned at continuing violence in Lebanon

"Everything should be done at this time to keep the situation from deteriorating," Marie Okabe, Ban`s deputy spokesperson, told reporters.

"The parties should address their political differences through peaceful means and dialogue," she said.

She added that Ban is aware of the continuing mediation role of the secretary-general of the Arab League and offered his full support.

Lebanon`s capital Beirut has been rocked by clashes between pro- and anti-government militias for the past three days. The country` s parliamentary system is paralyzed and the position of President has remained unfilled since November.

The Lebanese parliamentary majority, March 14 forces, expressed Friday support for the government of Prime Minister Fouad Seniora.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea made the remarks in a statement released after an urgent meeting of March 14 forces, urging Arab states and the international community to shoulder their responsibilities towards Lebanon.

The majority also called army to carry out its duties to protect the citizens and their properties.

The statement announced that Hezbollah operation in the capital is "an armed coop against democracy and the constitution," referring to the current deadly clashes in Beirut.

"This coop is not going to deter us, but will motivate us," the statement went on.
