UN Chief welcomes Sri Lanka's two-day truce.
Reiterating that LTTE mush allow civilians to choose whether they stay or leave, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said that this terrible conflict must end as soon as possible. Tens of thousands of people are risking their life. He also expressed hope that other member countries would chip in with Humanitarian aid.
An estimated 50,000 to 1,00,000 civilians are held in the NFZ declared by SL Government where LTTE's remaining top brass, including Velupillai Prabakaran, are hiding . Those trapped civilians are used as a human shield by LTTE despite repeated requested by the world to free them or altleast allow them to decied where should they go. LTTE is reported to be firing heavy weapons at any civilian they find trying to escape or even at times hacking the civilians to death or maiming them.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the Sri Lankan Government's decision to observe two-day ceasefire and asked the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to take "concrete and immediate" steps to protect civilians by respecting the pause for its full duration.
"During this period, civilians wishing to leave the conflict zone should be allowed to do so without any hindrance and should then be treated fully in accordance with international standards and principles.
In particular the LTTE must allow civilians to choose whether they stay or leave," Ban said in a statement, hours after the Sri Lankan Government announced a two-day pause in the military operations against the LTTE in view of Sinhala and Tamil New Year day.
He said the pause declared by Sri Lanka is less than the full humanitarian pause of several days he had demanded but nevertheless said it was a "useful first step and an opportunity to move towards the peaceful and orderly end to fighting now "badly needed."

So who else the Sri Lankan Government allowed to report on these situations other than defense.lk - the propaganda site for Sri Lankan Government's genocide.
In the so called "ceasefire" period, why not invite foreign media & journalists to show the real situation in the "safety zones" in Sri Lanka ? Would not a ceasefire situation nicely accommodate things like this to show the world what is actually happening in the "safety zones" ? That is if the Sri Lankan government actually have ceasefire in place, otherwise it is a pits too, what can I say.
Then Tamils don't have to still rely on their own sources to defend themselves, right?

"according to TamilNet correspondent reporting from the safety zone"
.......or according to the fiction writers in the Pro-LTTE cannibalistic Diaspora.

I was just wondering, If TamilNet correspondent can report peacefully from the safety zone with such comfort, then the situation must be real good over there. With internet , fax and all other facilities.
So, where is this shelling / systematic bread making is happening?
Don't you agree, Sudharaka?

No one want the people to suffer like this. It is really hard to go on with our lives even after knowing that all those innocent people spending every second of their life in hellfire. But let me repeat it...I repeat any number of times..that the reason for their suffering is LTTE hiding behind them and holding them as hostages. They only shoot ,maim and kill them. LTTE doing this for the safety of Prabhakaran, the terroist leader. You people are just playing pawn in his devilish scheme. Wake up. Ask whoever support them to stop it. Ask him to surrender.
</end_serious_note>
Hmmm..10 million dollars, did you say? Thank you for the information. Will keep that in mind when the negotiate for the next contract..!

LTTE must not hold the civilians hostage. What kind of freedom are they fighting for?

I have seen that video before. Though that was a terrible experience, it reminded me of something. In certain parts of world, you can see mafia rackets those kidnap our kids, maim them (blind, deform and disfigure) and then use for begging. Or you can see lepers who show their lost and disfigured limps to earn money.
I think that is exactly what happens here - but in a much brutal level and way. LTTE just hack the limps of people who try to escape - especially children, record them and broadcast through media. Giving captions saying that this happened during Sri Lankan shelling. Any one who see this and get the shock of their life will not think that how can a bomb / shell explosion injure only some parts of the body keeping the other intact. Second, how you will get a professional cameraman ready at that exact and at exact time. Any normal person would run to help the injured instead of taking videos.
“Diasporans”, despite of knowing all these still support LTTE and Prabhakaran because still they think that their "Eezham" dream will come true.
The limps of thousands of such children are a "small" price to pay for the safety of their "leedar and preseedant" Prabhakaran and his remaining cronies.
After all in any revolution there has to be some front line martyrs.
Still the LTTE " diasporans" do have the nerve to talk about humanity and humanitarian crisis. Whoever have seen their comments and posts would have noticed one common factor in those. The request for "independent" media. Since they have such professional propaganda machinery, it is easy to mislead the media person using such gruesome videos and real looking , but fabricated incidents.

Sara Star:
The only way to figure out the actual truth is to let the free media in and let the foreign aid agencies in to see the actual situation in Sri Lanka.
UN have to entertain on even small propaganda distributed by the Sri Lankan Government if they want to keep an dialogue open with Mahinda Government. Otherwise he will boot out UN calls to as he did for media and aid agencies.
Tamils in Sri Lanka & Tamils Diaspora's requests are:
(1) free media & journalists
(2) allow aid & aid agencies to come in to the war torn regions
(3) hold a independently held referendum for Tamils for a long term solution. I think the Tamils in Sri Lanka at least deserve that after 60 years of oppression.
It is waste discuss Sri Lankan Government's propaganda here, because it is obvious from the heavy media ban that they are trying to hide something.
Ok, let's say the LTTE is holding the civilian hostage, the Sri Lankan Government can easily give access to aid agencies and journalists to the area so that they would do the PR fighting for the government, right? Why the Sri Lankan government does not want to stop shelling and bombing even during the current 2 day "ceasefire" and does not want anybody to go near the so called "safty zones" ? If the so called "safe zones" are "safe" for Tamils civilians and the government directed them to go there, then why it would not be safe for journalists and aid agencies to operate from?

There is always two sides to any story, and it is preferred if independent sources are allowed to tell the news, and that is what urgently needed in Sri Lanka.
at 08:07 on April 13th, 2009
".......if independent sources are allowed to tell the news, and that is what urgently needed in Sri Lanka."
Yes, Indeed. Only news, because Prabhakaran and remaining top LTTE terrorists can escape and start the terror afresh. Not food or medicine or shelter or cloths for the civilians. In the mind of a LTTE supporter the safety of their "paymaster" has got paramount importance.

The video you have uploaded here shows a little body without legs cut off / or shelled off and Tamil mom crying "see this, see this, please help" hysterically and a nurse trying to attend to the little boy's wound. It is not clear what happened to the little boy. I watched the video entirely and many times to see if there are any signs or voice to actually express that LTTE has done this, I found there is not even slight evidence to support the title of the video.
In an already on going propaganda war in the current situation, you are using a suffering a small boy shown on video to make a huge judgment on a freedom struggle without any evidence. The video can be easily came from a Sri Lankan Army's shelling and bombing.
Nowhere in the video there is any evidence the LTTE has anything to do with it. Somebody used the title to accuse LTTE in here.
In the current situation it is wise to campaign for media freedom and media access to Sri Lanka so that the world can hear the truth of the war and their casualties, but using a hasty judgement to post a video without any evidence does not improve the current situation for the Tamils civilians. It only becomes part of the propaganda against the Tamils civilians dying in Sri Lanka, intentionaly or unintentionly.

You are putting much emphasis on the barbaric action, have no say in finding who actually did it ?
Why do you think Tamils are protesting for freedom and rights all over the world? because you can instigate such violence on Tamils boys and turn around and blame it LTTE, just purely by changing the title name.
What a great way to fight a war.
I am disgusted to see such a tremendous accusation made towards LTTE without evidence? Would you able to let me know how to do see that LTTE did this barbaric action towards this little boy? At least tell me what is the reasonable doubt that made this accusation towards LTTE viable in this video ? Just posting a barbaric video and changing the title to accuse LTTE is sufficient to say that LTTE has done it ? I have seen way, way, way better journalistic ethics in the world.
The title accusation of the video an unfair allegation weighed against a freedom struggle just to tarnish their efforts to bring peace and freedom to Tamils in Sri Lanka.
The video is inappropriate, just emits pure barbarism & violence, and conveys no message of who might have done the atrocity to the little boy, hence only does injustice to watch the inhumane scene without any justice can be voiced over who and what has happened to the little boy.
at 16:38 on April 13th, 2009
In any conflict propaganda is regularly used by both/all sides to influence opinion. There is no denying the tragic plight of this little boy, however it would be useful to know more about the origin of the video as well as what is being said within it in order to be able to make a decision about its veracity.
at 19:50 on April 13th, 2009
From what I could see little body screaming with a huge wound in his leg and a Tamil mom crying "see this, see this, please help" hysterically and a nurse trying to attend to the little boy's wound. Even though the video is not very clear, the audio is relatively ok. The mom or a relative, was crying hysterically regarding the boy's situation and trying to get medical help to him. I watched the video entirely and many times to see if there are any signs or voice to actually express that LTTE has done this, I found there is not any evidence to support the title of the video or to identify the culprits. However, the wound looks more like a shelled attack than anything else, but even that also could not be said with much certainty from the video.
There are two things certain from the video, these are Tamils civilians and the boy was in tremendous amount of pain and the mom was in horrific agony. A nurse was trying to do help the boy. That's all that can be derived from the video.
Tamils civilians are already in horrific situation in Sri Lanka, it is only ethical to report with great care at these times.
Otherwise, the Sri Lankan government will use the same propaganda and their results to gear up the war on these trapped 100,000 Tamils civilians under the name of "rooting out terrorism".

"I watched the video entirely and many times to see if there are any signs or voice to actually express that LTTE has done this..."
I could not even watch this video only once. After which I could not sleep that night. You watched this video many times just to "see that if there is any signs or voice to actually express that LTTE has done this" completely closing your ears to the agony of the boy and his mom???
That speaks volumes about what LTTE supporters are capable of and to what extend they go to save their terrorist leader Prabhakaran.
Plus there was a professional, impassionate and experienced videographer who shot the entire things unflinchingly. Only LTTE can do such gruesome act with such apathy.
"Small sacrifices" Sri Lankan Tamil civilians are forced to make for the well being of their leader - imposed by those so called "Eelans" who know and care cipher about them...!!
