More pressure is being brought to the military leaders in Fiji. The lastest is a demand by the UN Security Council that fair elections be held soon. This follows concerns expressed by Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific countries, Canada and a representative of the British Commonwealth.
UNITED NATIONS - Calling the military takeover in Fiji "a step backwards," the UN Security Council on Monday demanded the restoration of democracy and fair elections as soon as possible in the volatile South Pacific country.
Fiji's military ruler, who seized power more than two years ago, has refused to hold elections until 2014, despite the Court of Appeals declaring his government illegal. Armed forces chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama launched a fresh crackdown and insisted he will restore democracy only after he has rewritten the constitution and electoral laws that he says are biased against Fiji's ethnic Indian minority.
The military junta has expelled journalists and imposed censorship on the media in that country.
"The members of the Security Council are deeply concerned about the situation in Fiji, where undemocratic decisions were made including the abrogration of the constitution. It is a step backwards," said Claude Heller, the Mexican ambassador to the UN who presides over the council this month.

So many have fled Fiji over the past two decades. Nothing has changed so far.

I would suggest to the interim Government not to abrogate the constitution and follow the judgement given by the High Court. It would have been better for Frank to resolve the matter with former PM, Laisenia Qarase and the Bose Levu Vakaturaga. The BLV must be revived and the Charter must be presented to them if the IG wants the support of the Indegenous Fijians. It is common knowledge that Fijian are loyal to their Chiefs and they are the only one respected by the majority of the Fijians, Rotumans and our brothers the Indians. Much has been said about this important body, that must not take away the fact that they hold the very fibre of Fijian Solidarity. Lets come together, pray together cos time is running out before everything will come to an end for Fiji or for a purpoted minority elite. May God bless Fiji.
