UN Peacekeepers disciplined for sexual abuse: a slap on a wrist
Today is the international abolition day of slavery. Remembering all the victims of modern day slavery around the world and sexual abuse, I am searching for the reports on whether the authorities have brought the remedies for the victims of child molestation and sexual assault by the UN peacekeepers in Haiti, Congo, and many other countries. So far, they are nowhere to be found.
Many people are familiar with sex scandal involving UN peacekeepers. The peacekeepers raped and molested women and children while they were on the missions in exchange of the UN services (food, shelter, etc) which they rightly deserved. A month ago, a report announced the punishment of the peacekeepers for sexual abusing women and children. The disciplinary acts ranged from demotion in rank to serving 8 months in jail. On the other hand, the victims were left behind with no remedy but face a life long symptoms caused by sexual abuse. Would you say it was a slap on a wrist?
