UN Report Warns Nepal on Food Crisis

According to a report recently made public in Kathmandu by the United Nations World Food Program and the Nepal Development Research Council, about 5.6 million Nepalis are at food crisis risk. The report indicates that five million people in rural parts and six hundred thousand in urban areas are at food crisis risk.

The report has also recommended for the immediate supply of food to two million people in villages and 67 thousand people in urban areas. 

The report states that the recent oil price hikes have caused a rise of 27 percent of food price in the Nepali markets. It warns that the people at food crisis risk will face toughness with the further price hikes in the near future. As to coping with the crisis, the report has suggested the Nepal government to devise a new agricultural production strategy and food distribution system.

The technical report, moreover, has stressed on the modernization of Nepal’s agricultural systems and the use of advanced quality seeds.
