UN Press briefing on SL issues on 4th May 2009

According to UN report as on 4-May-2009:
 - > The fighting has intensified and heavy weapons are being used
->  Sri Lanka estimated 50,000 people are trapped in the fighting
->  Total internally displaced people (IDP) : 188,000  In Detention Camp: 186,000 In hospital: 1,700
-> Sri Lanka atlast agreed to provide cooked food at screen point

“According to reports from those remaining inside the conflict zone, fighting has intensified with both light and heavy weapons being used,” UN spokesperson Marie Okabe told reporters on Monday in New York, citing information from the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The United Nations remains concerned that military operations have continued over the past week in the conflict zone in northern Sri Lanka, where an estimated 50,000 people are trapped by fighting between government forces and the LTTE, she said.

According to OCHA, as of Monday, more than 188,000 people have crossed out of the conflict zone, with the vast majority accommodated in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Vavuniya. Over 186,000 are in camps, and some 1,700 wounded and their caregivers are in hospitals.

“There has been no report of displaced persons on their way to the camps since 27 April, although delays in confirming numbers mean that official counts lag behind realities on the ground,” Ms. Okabe said.

Meanwhile, UN agencies are working to meet the basic needs of the arriving IDPs. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been able to accelerate food distribution in Vavuniya, and the Government of Sri Lanka has agreed that cooked meals should be provided at Omanthai screening point.

In Jaffna, response in the camps has been stepped up in the area of health, including the treatment of chicken pox, the provision of toilets, hygiene kits, temporary teaching space and supplementary food. In addition, work to protect civilians and to facilitate family reunifications is ongoing, the UN reported.

Asked about reports of hospital shelling, the Spokeswoman said that the United Nations was unable to confirm such reports independently, but added that it remains particularly concerned about the situation of the estimated 50,000 remaining civilians in the area, who are believed to be at serious risk. The United Nations also remains concerned about heavy fighting, she said.

The UN does not say any thing about Heavy weapons nor does it confirm reports of a Hospital being bombed, the UN said that it has heard of those reports, however that none can be confirmed nor denied at this point.

You are urged to watch the full video posted by Senthil. Only excerpts have been included by Tamilnation (another terrorist supporting organization) in their report.

There been a vedio shows who is firing with heavy weapons and then they put the blame for the goverment. Theorically there in no need of using any heavy arms as it is a small area to cover. LTTE makes videos of heavy wepons used by army but actually it was used by the LTTE. this is proof by the captured video from LTTE as how they fire the heavy guns.

Even UN or any other country cant ask use this or that as they never comes when LTTE kills or bombed Sri Lanka or its people. Althe time send the condolance to Sri Lankan people and what they ask from LTTE ?  It is hilerious how they ask to serve terrorist in 02 kinds. If Sri Lankan forces cant use heavy weapons then the other countries also used the same standards to the war on terror on Al qaida or any baned terrorist group.

Best thing is there are people organize for show these sort of stories as terrorist videos the heavy guns fired and then to the media to show it as goverment of Sri Lanka using and asking to stop the mission. If any body have a brain that can understand what is really going on. Senthil dont bring UN or any other party to asist terrorists. u should be shamed that still u wag your tail for terrorist need and not the Tamils need for eleminate LTTE. Hilrious part is Tamils in Sri Lanka support this on going huamanterion missions and people like u who even not staying in Sri Lanka shouts for what? Is it your dollars make u bark as there is not a single report of yours talking about the Tamils escape from LTTE and still try to save there lives.

Please do sometyhing to these Tamils when they really need your knowledge or your skills rather puting it for a babaric terrorist .
