UN Security Council acknowledges Sri Lankas right to fight terrorism, Calls on LTTE to surrender

UN Security Council, after it's first formal session on the situation in Sri Lanka has come down heavily on the LTTE.

Furthermore, it has acknowledged the legitimate right of GoSL to combat terrorism.

The UNSC has also taken note of the humanitarian efforts of the GoSL.

SECURITY COUNCIL PRESS STATEMENT ON SRI LANKA

The following Security Council press statement on Sri Lanka was read out today by Council President Vitaly Churkin ( Russian Federation):

The members of the Security Council strongly condemn the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for its acts of terrorism over many years, and for its continued use of civilians as human shields, and acknowledge the legitimate right of the Government of Sri Lanka to combat terrorism.

The members of the Security Council demand that the LTTE lay down its arms and allow the tens of thousands of civilians still in the conflict zone to leave.

.......

The members of the Security Council take note of the steps taken by the Government of Sri Lanka to address the humanitarian situation of displaced persons and call on the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure the security of those displaced by the conflict and to cooperate with the United Nations, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and other international humanitarian organizations in providing humanitarian relief and access to them as soon as they leave the conflict zone.

Great !

If things were all to be decided by countries that are controlled by a Vote Base, Sri Lanka would have been in a different position today.

Well, Thanks UN.
UN, You are making the same mistake again as in Darfur humanitarian crisis. It was then the same countries ( Russia and China ) who was always against the resolution. Of course, weapons is their main business.

Not a word about indiscriminate shelling on hospitals! And the thousands of innocent victims.

"Tonight Everything will be alrite!"

Not for the thousands of tamils who are the victims of this war.

I think the Video is doctored. So, nobody should worry.

.....and the press release too.

B12N,

"Of course, weapons is their main business. "
But they're helping to not drag this on for another 30 years aren't they? that's poor logic.

"Not a word about indiscriminate shelling on hospitals! And the thousands of innocent victims."
That's why they are warning the LTTE. Sadly for the LTTE, except for UK, France and Austria, the rest of them have not bought the stories of the good doctor of the NFZ (which could be Prabhakaran himself calling from NFZ for all we know)

"Not for the thousands of tamils who are the victims of this war. "
You forget the thousands of Sinhalese and Muslims who were victims of LTTE. Now they have started killing the Tamils also. You should be glad that we can see the end of Prabhakaran soon, and the civilians will be free.

This is clearly identifies Sri Lanka as a sovereign nation with a legitimate right to combat the LTTE, a terrorist outfit.

So much so for the diasporan "carnival barkers" and their KoG (Kingdom of Gorillas) theory.

So in UNSC too, the terrorists "Sethi pochchi" again ?

Terrorism is bad. The UNSC has sent out one of its regular/usual condemnations...

The government in power has the power to curtail proof its own involvement in crimes. Thats the sad truth about SL.

@ sudharaka -

SL could have the legitimate right to combat the LTTE - but why the heck are they doing ritualistic ethnic cleansing???  I can't think of any "so called sovereign" state doing these crimes against humanity.

Which "so called sovereign" state kills the Food Aid and Red Cross people? And which one would not allow independent channels/journos inside the restive areas?

It all happens in in the "so called sovereign" sri lanka. Wat a sad truth.

Here comes the barking dawg....

@ Hutchison (the barking dawg) --not verified--

Forgot the login? ;-)

Anyways, crimes are being committed by the LTTE and the UNSC has clearly stated what is what and what is not.

If at all, ethnic cleansing was committed by the LTTE, in their pursuit of the Utopian, mono-ethnic hellhole, a.k.a. Eelam/zham.

Food aid to the affected areas has not been curtailed at anytime, in fact the LTTE is depriving the civilians of the food and medical aid sent there, keeping the lion's (or shall I say the tiger's) share for their consumption.

You better ask your friends in the LTTE why they kill the aid workers.

A sovereign state can decide whom to allow and whom not to allow, within the territory under it's jurisdiction.

"If at all, ethnic cleansing was committed by the LTTE, in their pursuit of..."

Ethnic cleansing by the LTTE??  C'mon, you gotts be outa ur minds. Now stop the comedy capers and get the information right, my friend...

"You better ask your friends in the LTTE why they kill the aid workers."

Sadly I dont have friends there...cos I dont sympathise with them...the problem being with the SL forces/ Govt.

"A sovereign state can decide whom to allow and whom not to allow, within..."

Yes, a sovereign state can decide who "to kill" and whom "to to kill"...

//Ethnic cleansing by the LTTE??  C'mon, you gotts be outa ur minds. Now stop the comedy capers and get the information right, my friend...//

Then how do you explain the overnight chasing away of the Muslims from Jaffna peninsula.

//Sadly I dont have friends there...cos I dont sympathise with them...the problem being with the SL forces/ Govt.//

Now you stop the comedic capers.

//Yes, a sovereign state can decide who "to kill" and whom "to to kill"...//

Hell yeah, it's the V. Pirapaharan & Co. they have decided to exterminate.

1
Hutchison

Muslims were chased away 'cos that would have left only the tamils in the region. A deliberate act by the SLA. This way, the tamil population could become an easy target. Isolation and attack has always been the modus operandi of the armed forces there...

3
sudharaka

You may enlighten yourself on the history.

The expulsion of the Muslims from the Northern province was an act of ethnic cleansing carried out by the Tamil militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organization in October 1990. In order to achieve their goal of creating a mono ethnic Tamil state in the North Sri Lanka, the LTTE forcibly expelled the 75,000 strong Muslim population from the Northern Province. The LTTE later apologized (during the 2000 peace talks) for this act and asked the Muslims to return back, however very few Muslims have actually taken up the offer.

If me creating a login would make my points truer, then I'd rather do it my friend. ;)

Ethnic cleansing by the LTTE? Oh c'mon, stop these comedic capers...get the information right.

"Food aid to the affected areas has not been curtailed at anytime, in fact...."  -  I never mentione food not being allowed -

So, your continuance of  being "anon" means you don't think your points are not any truer. Good that u admit it.

Bertrand Russell

Im so sick of the united nations, its an oil money think tank, founded on land that was donated by Rockefeller which used to be a slaughterhouse, apparently it still is, these people run around the world waiting for blood to spill, then after having brunch they issue a press conference talking about how horrid it was. And have the nerve to pretend they want to help, yeah right, they know that its their little piece of paper which served as the doormat that got Iraq invaded which took place at a time when old saddam was about to start selling his oil in euro's, the european union is their other scam job, but of course  everybody in Airstrip 1 already knows that by now, we have always been at war with East Asia.

Anybody who wants to do any good in the world needs to quit the UN its a refried league of nations, everybody knows them and dr.WHO are the ones causing more trouble than they ever fix. They sit there an pretend to be a voice for the downtrodden meanwhile they are stepping on faces providing cover for corporations and governments to euthanize and exterminate their people which the eugenics obsessed founders of the united nations and league of nations made so famous during world war 2 in germany, but of course we have always been at war with Oceania.

The UN is not the problem though Bertrand Russell, the Veto right is however a problem.

The USA, China, Russia, Great Briton and France have each veto right and are permanent members of the security counsel. If any of them opposes any resolution even though all other 142 members agree, it wont pass because of the veto right.

In this case China, Russia, Vietnam and Japan oppose sanctions or UN interference, two of those have Veto rights, even though the waste majority of the UN members favour UN sanctions and interference, it can not happen because of the veto right.

Why the UN does need reforms and abolish the veto right.

Same problem in other conflicts as well.

United what?

until veto is abolished, lets call it United Nothing!

What one expect from Russia, Who did the SAME GENOCIDE of CHECHENS using THERMO-BARIC Chemical weapons and the China doing all the atrocities in China and support Sudan and Srilankan Genocide??

LTTE's MAJOR CRIME is that THEY don't do Terrorism against Sinhaese as Srilanka have been doing. LTTE now have nothing to lose by doing the SAME SRILANKAN STYLE LIBERATION of Sinhala Criminals settled in TAMIL AREAS after 1948 to date.

According to 1837  British Census in Srilanka, there were JUST 18 SINHALESE lived in the ENTIRE North and East now Sinhala population grown to near 1 MILLION thanks to Srilankan Sinhella racist systtematic ETHNIC CLEANSING of Tamils and Muslims since 1948 to date.

LTTE, come on LER the Barbarians have it, No choice now
