While overall the European

Union is good for Britain it

also has some disadvantages.

The government was warned five years ago that European laws governing the employment of foreign workers in the UK would result in the current industrial unrest sweeping the country.

The revelation comes amid fears that the row is playing into the hands of the far right and claims that similar strikes could affect other key projects.

The disruption has come back to haunt the prime minister, Gordon Brown, who in 2007 - in his first speech to the Labour party as its leader - promised to bring in "British jobs for British workers".

This protest is a distraction from the real problem: the massive increase in legal and illegal immigration from outside the European Union. Alone, Britain's muslim population has increased by 400,000 in the last four years. They should be focussing on keeping Europe European.

I could not agree more with you.

I agree that illegal immigration must be stopped and legal immigration should be limited.

yes immigration is far to high but what can you expect from a foreign loving loving government. browns attitude is stuff the english and look after the scroungers from overseas , he is going to sort this dispute ( how by telling the english workers to love thy neighors from abroad who are taking your jobs. england used to be english, now its try to spot the englishman. global warming is NOT causing the tide to rise its the foreign scroungers sinking our island.

My dear, with all the problems Britain is currently facing, in my opinion you should not worry about skilled European coming to work and pay taxes in this country, as there will not be many left very soon, but about the ones exploiting the benefit system and spreading terrorism.

Many good English citizens have escaped and have gone to warmer climates where their money goes 5 or 6 times further. lol Spot the English in Asia has become much easier than spotting the English in some parts of London. lol

But to be truthful I can not blame those in poverty getting on their bike or now plane or boat to get a job. The real answer is a global answer of sharing wealth by investment where its really needed to help people help themselves better trade better world organization an vastly improved United Nations. Better education and a real move to rid corruption world wide.

Self interest is not the answer, nationalism is not the answer, elitism is not, communism is not, nor is religion. These people your talking about are human just like you and me a mixture of good and bad, indoctrinated and free thinking they love and hate too. They just want to eat have somewhere to live and a better life for their kids. Nationally the opposition to that is this is our land we were born here and we don't care sod off as we come first. Meanwhile there are millions of people in the world still living in poverty wanting what you have. Yes there is a need to curb immigration but other answers are needed and pure nationalism in its worst political terms is not the moral answer.

Perhaps the answer to the problem is global and not national one and there is a need for a global think tank of our cleverest academics world wide to sit down and try to provide solutions but the solutions will all need backing up with investments that unfortunately in the reality to the world we live in needs to be profit making. That's the reason  that poverty exist to day as its un-profitable to solve and poverty is the main reason for a need for immigration control. Sad but its true.

Thanks for the comment.

The US is having similar problems and there are no easy answers.

I blame Grumpy Gordan myself!  His slogan:  "British Jobs for British Workers" was irresponsible - he knew that the slogan should have been European jobs for European workers, since he is part of the law writing politicians!  But he chose to re-awaken British chauvinism!

Thank you.  I agree he should have said it differently

I have been against EU from the very start and have been frustrated that every thing has been political and carried across both Tory and Labour administration without a vote of should we be in the EU.

I would rather see a Global Union as splitting up the world in large super groups will to my mind end up in wars concerning trading and possibly a real world war. My opposition is not a nationalistic one, nationalism is dangerous for world unity.

That is an interesting viewpoint.  It could happen some day but not soon.
