The University of Miami was on lockdown today at the Coral Gables Campus, due to at least two people firing a BB Gun nearby. The lockdown is now over and the the suspects have been caught.

"The campus is safe and secure and has been re-opened," said UM officials in advisory posted on its Web site only minutes ago.

The lockdown occured at 2:42pm local time, and it advised all students and faculty to go indoors and remain there, even though this seemed like a extreme measure to some students. After students found out it was a BB Gun they were relieved however. None of the students reported that they were anxious during the lockdown.

ordan Caruso, an 18-year-old freshman at UM, first got a text from his brother, who is also a student, about a shooter on campus at 2:44 p.m. and three minutes later got a text message form the University saying a BB gun was involved in the incident.

Even though a BB gun was used in the shoot out, we still have to be careful. There are countless reports of BB gun fatality in the past, so it is still dangerous. It was good this time that the Emergency Notifications were sent as soon as the shoot out was reported. At least some of us could find safe places to hide. In my opinion, the steps taken to lockdown the campus is not an extreme measure. What if those people involved decided to do a shooting spree? With a lot of us walking throughout campus, it will not be safe. Kudos to UM for the steps taken.
