Dothan, Alabama is a small town in Southern Alabama close to the gulf and about 1 1/2 hours from Panama City Beach Florida. My sister who is 10 months younger than me lived there for 20 years before moving to Birmingham. This small quiet town that's one big circle is so laid back. I was told by my brother in law one time that folks down there didn't move as fast as folks did up in Virginia. I needed to kick it down a few notches when I was there. Meaning I was too high strung for that little laid back town. Even the damn trains ran slow, so when I heard this story about Perry Griffin I was shocked. Totally not something you would hear about in this small town of Alabama.

Father of Three Gunned Down

Police say when employees arrived to work at the Panhandle Converter and Scrap Company located in Dothan, Ala. they were devastated to find their boss shot to death in the company's parking lot.

Police say Perry Griffin, 37, arrived at the company around 3:00 a.m. to pick up a truck loaded with scrap metal. He planned on making an early morning run to Mississippi.  Surveillance cameras on the property show Perry arriving and picking up the truck. Perry is seen unlocking a security gate and driving the truck out.  He then hopped out of the truck and locked the gate behind him. Police say the tape then showed that Perry wasn't the only one on the property that morning. Detectives say as Perry was walking back to the truck a masked man armed with a shotgun confronted him.

Following a verbal exchange, police say Perry made his move, trying to grab the weapon away from the masked attacker. But at that moment, a second masked gunman emerged from the shadows. Investigators say a struggle ensued and Perry was fatally shot. Police recovered one the weapons at the crime scene.

Police believe robbery may have been the motive behind the slaying. Detectives say the video shows one of the gunmen grabbing money off the ground before fleeing the parking lot.  Police say the video is grainy, but hope someone can help identify who these two men are. Both men are described as tall with a slender build.  Police say they were both wearing masks and dark clothing.

Everything he did he did with his family from vacations to attending Sunday mass.

Perry Griffin the Man

Perry was a great dad and husband. Perry Griffin attended Auburn University, but later went on to culinary school at Virginia College in Birmingham, Alabama.  Family members say cooking was Perry's passion.  He spent most of his working life as a chef at resorts through out the South.

Perry had recently decided that his cooking career kept him away from his family too much. He changed jobs, taking the position of Chief Operations Officer for Panhandle Converter and Scrap Company. He enjoyed spending more time with his wife of eleven years and their three children ages 3, 5, and 8.

Thank you Amy, it is sad. I can't believe that this happened there. Really it's just a small sweet little town.

Even small layed-back towns have their drifters and lowlifes. Let's hope that the video will assist in finding those responsible. There is often much less to go on than that.

Thank You for your comment and your right. Thirteen years in the Fire Department and Rescue Squad I've seen a lot of those lowlife's and drifters come through here. It's just a shame that it happened in such a nice little innocent town.
