In response to the Sri Lankan government holding the 300,000 Tamils under Sri Lankan Security Forces ran camps for over 3 months now, the Amnesty International responded with an online petition to free the civilians of these camps; the recipient of the online petition is Basil Rajapaksa, Senior Advisor to the Sri Lankan president and one of the Brother of the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Unlock the Camps in Sri Lanka

300,000 people displaced by the fighting in Sri Lanka are held by the government in de facto detention camps. They cannot leave the camps, where conditions are "appalling" according to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

Call on the Sri Lankan government to immediately allow the displaced civilians freedom of movement: those who wish to leave the camps should be free to do so. Urge them to place the camps under civilian, not military, management and to allow aid agencies, journalists and human rights observers full, unhindered access to the camps to carry out their functions and prevent possible abuses. mye8="crisis";

Please sign the Amnesty International Online petition to free the civilians from the government ran detention camps.

what is wrong with with AI

dont these idiots understand what terrorism and its implications are. perhaps they are too cocooned to know the misery of people affected.

there are terrorists among the IDPs. if they only read the news items thousands of screened IDPs haver been resettled.

how about AI petitioning USA to unlock gtbay.

AI can be a real joke

Ok, if that the Sri Lankan government is trying separate LTTE cadets from the civilians, why not allow journalists, aid workers and international monitoring into these camps ?

Since the SL government is claiming victory over LTTE and the LTTE has accpeted to silence their guns, shouldn't these LTTE cadets also should be under international monitoring and amnesty while they are re-habilitated, and not under the  force of Sri Lankan Security Forces ?

Why the Sri Lankan government using the Sri Lankan Security Forces and the Paramilitary groups to silently kill these Tamils as there are no internationally / independently monitored records for the people living here ?

The Sri Lankan government wants to hide the killings, torture, forced disappreances, rape and unthinkable living conditions in these camps, which is a silent genocide. The Sri Lankan government killed off 30,000 Tamils in just mere few months, and it is killing of Tamils in these camps now.

Many GoSL supporters can never answer the question at hand, it is always beating around the bush, and trying to divert the issue to something else.

There are not over 250,000 innocent civilians living in gtbay, and do you think the AI needs to solve every issue in the world before it can petition the worst human rights abuses in Sri Lanka ?!!

Listen GoSL,

Aid workers and journalists can segregate LTTE cadres from tamils. Allow them inside the camps.

International monitoring can keep monitoring the situation exactly like they ‘monitored’ LTTE’s 'freedom fight' for last thirty years. Allow them too.

LTTE cadres deserved to be treated like PoWs because in the last 30 years they were 'freedom struggling' fare and square - attacking only military targets; never targeting civilians. So now onwards please send movie actors (preferably females), masseurs and baby-sitters to treat the captured LTTE cadres, instead of army and para-military forces . If possible, arm them with lollypops and pacifiers.

Don't genocide®. Genocide® is injurious to health.

Dear Tamiya,

Even whilst living many miles away from SL, your consistant concern over the Tamils in SL should be appreciated in the first place.

But there are a few 'facts' one should pay attention to, if you are to take a balanced account on the whole setup.

the LTTE has accpeted to silence their guns - They have a reputation for making similar blunders over 10 times during the conflict, so would any govt. take this claim seriously ? Please see;

http://www.dailymirror.lk/DM_BLOG/Sections/frmNewsDetailView.aspx?ARTID=57768

why not allow journalists, aid workers and international monitoring -

What all these so called international monitors did when LTTE was building bunkers and luxury living facilities for leaders with the IC aid money whilst the poor Tamil public was starving has taken all credibility off these so called international agencies. 'Victim Industry' was a lucrative business in SL too, some time back.

No matter who says what, what is happening in SL is percived as an internal affair by the foreign  govts including US, Canada, UK (not a few isolated politicians) so they continue to keep providing loans and aid to SL.

18% from the 20.2 Mn in SL are Tamils. Except for the 250,000 in the IDP camps, nearly 3.5 Mn Tamils are freely moving about in the so called Sinhalese-chauvinist dominent South, with the Muslims, Burgers etc., in perfect harmony. This fact and the Embassies in SL (not to mention their Intelligence Agents), are good enough monitors for the IC, if they want to form an opinion about the conduct of SL.

Many GoSL supporters can never answer the question at hand, it is always beating around the bush, and trying to divert the issue to something else.

I am not a PA supporter,  my personal opinion is that, yes; these IDPs are detainees. Most of these 300,000 people stuck to LTTE up to the last moment because they chose to. They moved along with LTTEs shrinkage not because they had a zero chance to escape. The bitter truth is that "all of them are LTTErs until proven not".

So, sorry, they have to pay the price in the name of the peace and safety of 20.2 Mn ordinary citizens (inclusive of the 3.5 Mn lawful Tamils) for some more time.

But rest be assured, it won't be as long as 30 years that those 19+ Mn suffered because of the LTTE terrorists.

All the IDS are eyewitnesses of the Sri Lankan atrocities. So the government will keep them there until they are sure that no one will raise any voice against them.

Demining  is an stupid excuse.  Ther are plenty of areas, families, friends where these IDP's can go to.

THERE IS NO FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT.
NO VISITORES ALLOWED.
RESTRICTED ACCESS FOR NGO's.
NOT ENOUGH FOOD.
NO PROPER SHELTER.

It is a military run concentration camp.
300.000 people inside agree
Amnesty international agree
Human rights watch agree
Tamils worldwide agree ( Tamils from sri lanka can't raise any voice against the gov)
Red Cross agrees
Many NGO's confirmed that the government is blocking aid to these camps.

Only the corrupted racist government ran by some war loving Buddhist monks speak about welfare camps.

Bugger off Amnesty. Mind your own bloody business.

It is us who will have to face the brunt of terrorism and suicide bomb attacks if these terrorists are let loose. What right do you have to lecture us from the safety of your offices in the west, which are paid for by the mass murdering regimes of Britain and USA?

This is why Sri Lankans punish NGO workers when we can't find the actual terrorists. Remember the ACF 17?

"This is why Sri Lankans punish NGO workers when we can't find the actual terrorists. Remember the ACF 17"

This is how sri lankan army acts. If they can't find the LTTE they kill innocents or wipeout the entire villages.

"It is us who will have to face the brunt of terrorism and suicide bomb attacks if these terrorists are let loose."

It is the entire Tamil population terrorised by the coward racist sinhalese governmnet and army for decades. There are about 60.000 children,  many thoudsands of eldery people and women. You call them terrorists? The biggest terrorists are the SL government, the army and people supporting the goverment.
