"In the past decade a quarter of the population have fled the country. At least half of those remaining face starvation. Any dissent is stamped on and all elections are rigged. Zimbabwe leads the world: highest inflation rate, lowest life expectancy, highest number of orphans per capita, fastest shrinking economy, highest unemployment. With one of the highest rates of HIV/AIDS worsened by malnutrition, Zimbabwe's death rate exceeds Darfur and the combined death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The situation has been worsened by Mugabe's Operation Murambatsvina "Drive Out Trash." In a move reminiscent of Pol Pot's genocide in Cambodia, Mugabe destroyed the homes and livelihoods of poor people in towns throughout the country to drive them back to the rural areas where they can starve out of the public eye.
Mugabe's desperate efforts to stay in power have been most recently illustrated by the brutal assault on the opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his colleagues. While the UN appeals for US$257m for humanitarian air for Zimbabwe, Mugabe has ordered 12 military aircraft from China costing US$240m. The Vigil urges President Mbeki of South Africa to stop Mugabe's madness."
