In a gory reminder of how deep caste lines run in Rajasthan, two Dalit women, one of them a 15-year-old, were stripped in public by members of the dominant Jat community in Ajmer district's Sayar village. Not just that, eight members of the family were brutally assaulted and thrown out of the village as they tried to stop the Jats who were allegedly trying to drag the 15-year-old Radha (name changed)away.

The incident occurred late Monday evening, when two Jat men tried to take Radha away. When her 52-year-old mother tried to stop them, both she and Radha were stripped. The family said that when they tried to stop the duo, they were also beaten up and then thrown out of the village.

Thetormented family, including the six children, is now sitting in front of theoffice of Sarwar town deputy SP, under whose jurisdiction the village falls.Terrorised, they have refused to return to their home due to fear for theirlives. Satnarayan Kamad, head of the family, said: "We can't go back as no onewas there to help us. People will kill us."

What's worse is the police inaction that too from a female police officer — Dy SP Sarita Singh, who told TOI: "I went to the village and spoke to people, who have agreed to let the family come back to the village. I have submitted the report to the SP and am waiting for his further orders."

Singh also said she had no jurisdiction to slap Prevention of Atrocity Against Women or SC/ST Act, as that could only be done after taking permission from the district police chief.

var RN = new String (Math.random()); var RNS = RN.substring (2,11); var b2 = ' '; if (doweshowbellyad==1) bellyad.innerHTML = Meanwhile, the two accused — identified as Banalal Dhakad and Jasraj Dakad — still roam free. And while an FIR has been registered under Sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 333 (causing grievous hurt to deter a public servant from his duty) of the IPC, the police are yet to take any concrete action against them.

Ajmer SP Anand Srivastava said he had just returned from violence-hit Bayana in Bharatpurdistrict and wasn't aware of the case. "Let me find out and if guilty, none will be spared," he said.[/q]

Sanjay Jha, I like this story. It's good stuff. One would think in this day and age, things like this would be a distant memory. Apparently not!

Sanjay Jha, thank you for posting this. I don't really know what to say about it apart from that it's deeply upsetting.
