Update 2: 39 killed in car bombing at Pakistan polling station
The death toll in suicide bombing at a polling station in Pakistan on Monday mounted to 39, including two police personnel and 17 children, while four children are among 14 injured still under treatment at Dagar Hospital.
The death toll in the Buner suicide bomb attack at a polling station during by-elections polls being held at a Shal Bandai school has mounted to 39.
According to police sources, two police personnel and 17 children are among the deceased.
Fourteen injured including four children still under treatment in Dagar Hospital among which some are reported in a critical state.
Earlier 35 people, including two policemen and four children, were reported killed and 20 others injured on Sunday when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive-laden car into a polling station set up at a school for the by-election to Pakistan's National Assembly for NA-28 (Buner) seat from the troubled North West Frontier Province.
According to eyewitness accounts, a suicide bomber riding a red Suzuki car ploughed into election camps of political parties before hitting the shops and building of the Government Middle School at Shalbandai village, located about six kilometres south of Buner district headquarters, Daggar, at 10:55 a.m. (local time).
The Swat chapter of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. Speaking on the group's illegal FM Radio channel, TTP Swat deputy head Maulana Shah Dauran said the bombing was in retaliation to the death of six TTP fighters gunned down on August 13 this year in Shalbandai by villagers at the government's behest to hunt down militants. He alleged that the bodies of the slain militants were dragged through the streets of the village.
Dauran claimed that more than 40 villagers, including eight political workers belonging to Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, Awami National Party and Pakistan People's Party were killed in the attack and among them were some who had shot dead six militants at Shalbandai. He said the revenge was not yet over and every person in Shalbandai would be eliminated for killing the militants.
The 20 injured persons were admitted to different hospitals and five of them were stated to be in a critical condition.
Among the dead, there were at least four children, who were watching the balloting process outside camps set up by the candidates.
After the incident, the district returning officer suspended the polling and announced to conduct fresh polling at a later date at 11 polling stations in Shalbandai and adjoining Amnawar village.
Eyewitnesses said the bomber's car was plastered with election posters and was, therefore, allowed to cross security checkpoints.
