"We just got back from Spain when we heard the news. We are watching TV while we are waiting for our taxi to take us home and so far the death toll is nine," said Marijke Mannak just after 12pm over the telephone. "We are quite shocked. Schiphol is scarily empty.

During the first hours after the crash, the reports with regards to the death toll were contradictory. While Turkish Airlines at first denied any casualties, quite a number of media reports spoke of one death. A picture of a photojournalist employed by the Dutch press agency ANP however, showed various bodies under white sheets. This kick started the discussion.

Farmers in the area had been assisting emergency services by transporting injured passengers with their trucks and tractors to the ambulances. The soil of the area where the plane crashed, farm land, is very damp and soft  this time of year. For these conditions tractors are much more suitable then regular vehicles.

The plane, with 135 passengers on board, crashed just before the runway and was severely damaged. According to eyewitnesses, the plane broke in three pieces but did not catch fire.

The cause of the accident has not been confirmed yet.

as far as I know, a 10th person passed away in one of the hospital

Also, 3 cabin crew's bodies were left inside the plane on purpose for further investigation, they were just removed.
