Update~ Austin and Angel: Saved from BC cougar attack
Update: January 5, 2010
CTV News has released that Angel made it successfully through Monday's surgeries to repair the damage done by the cougar and will hopefully be returning home sometime today.
Regarding the first cougar attack that happened last week in northern British Columbia, the mother and boy from Danskin, BC are also thankfully safe.
May the public take these two incidences of cougars attacks as warning, these large cats that usually keep to the dark of the forest are getting hungry and may be out looking for food. For those in rural, semi rural or even urban areas, keep an eye on your animals and children while outside and stay aware of your surroundings while in your backyard or out in the bush.
Original Story:
The story is told by a greatful grandfather who now relieved, tells a vivid tale of how their family dog saved his grandson from a nearly fatal cougar attack.
The way Lloyd Forman sees it, his 11-year-old grandson was saved by an Angel.
That's the retriever who protected young Austin from a charging cougar during a bloody, against-all-odds confrontation Saturday in the tiny British Columbia community of Boston Bar, about 200 kilometres northeast of Vancouver.
Austin and the lab, significantly named Angel, had reportedly been in the back yard of the house getting firewood when out of nowhere the cougar came after the 11 year old Austin. Before the cougar could reach the boy, Angel intervened giving the boy time to run inside to safety and for help. After a lengthy fight entailed between the cougar and dog, the family feared for the dogs life.
A nearby RCMP officer arrived within minutes of receiving the call to maim the cougar. Successfully, the cougar was shot by the officer and Angel miraculously survived with some wounds. Thankfully for the Forman family Austin and Angel are both still safe all because of the braveness of their family dog.
