A Far Right Blogger claims that initial police reports claim that Li was a MUSLIM but have covered the story up because of the political implications.

I've learned for sure now, via a VFR reader who participates at Liberty Post under the name brave stranger, that the Chinese language North American newspaper World Journal says that Li is a Muslim. And just now as I'm writing this, as a result of my request made through brave stranger, a paragraph from the World Journal article has been translated into English and posted. While the information is very thin and lacks any named sources, it is nevertheless the first statement by a news media organ that Li is a Muslim. The operative passage is: "Those who know Li Weiquang say that he is a Muslim, married, and since coming to Canada has worked in restaurants and newspaper delivery." I've also heard in the last half hour from a Chinese-American who tells me, based on his seeing the same newspaper story, that Li belongs to the Hui ethnic group, which is Muslim. [/q]

----------------

It has been revealed by CTV WINNIPEG that crazed butcher, Vince Li, worked as a Church Custodian at the Grant Memorial Chruch in Winnipeg and was a member of the congregation.  Pastor Tom Castor said, "He did a good job".

Pastor Tom Castor says Li, a recent immigrant at the time, seemed happy to have a job and was committed to doing it well.

"I think he would occasionally feel frustrated with not being able to communicate or understand," Castor told CTV News. "But we have a very patient staff and he seemed to respond well."

Castor says Li was quiet, and did not show any sign of anger issues or any other trouble before he quit in the spring of 2005.

The congregation is offering support to Li's wife, Anna Li, who Castor says is in shock and is very afraid about her future.

Vince Weiguang Li worked for six months as a custodian at the Grant Memorial Church in Winnipeg and was a member of the congregation.

Christina 123, I like this story. Intersting background information. Are you saying, he did not speak or understand English? why would someone go to church understanding nothing? For image reasons, bizarre.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good stuff. Honestly, would we point this out if he was any other faith?  The incidence of killing is lower of those who attend services on a regular basis vs. those who have no faith.  The same goes for other faiths.  would we say anything if the man was a atheist or agnostic? I guess a Church goer killing is so rare that it is news.

Christina 123, I like this story. It's good. There is something about church that attracts people that are looking for peace for their tormented souls, some find it ........some don't

It goes to show that simply being a Church member is not the answer. I was a Church goer for many years, but the church never taught us the virtues to Nonviolence. In fact Church going rather heightened the threat to have more violence in our life. Our Churches are pews of hypocrisy, and an on going deluge of bad is good rhetoric. We need The International Institute of Nonviolence. We get at the heart of the Message, and that is to work toward our life in supporting all efforts possible  to not use Violence. When we see that Preachers do not speak of Nonviolence, and only ramble on about Jesus this and Jesus that, how is it we get what we need in our real lives. Preachers and Priests have really let our society down, when we keep getting crimes upon crimes, upon crimes. Please join our efforts in building a good and vibrant world where Jesus speaks about Nonviolence, and how it is necessary to follow such life toward Nonviolence; Please join us at The International Institute of Nonviolence.

Praise to you.

Rev. Jermano

I have been hearing more about his statement to the police that he was a muslim and the words of the quoran(sp?) drove him to do this. was reported on by the CBC, then removed from all articles. Belows link is a site that is discussing it. I also wondered why did he go to a baptist church when he could not understand a thing? To be Canadian and to blend in? Why is the government not telling the whole story or why did the RCMP let him destroy the body further for 3 hours and only watch him do it? Do they not have guns anymore? For the dignity of the young mans body and for his family, they should have stopped this act of horror, but they did nothing, and took 24 hours to notify them in an instant technology day and age, shameful!

Are you sure?  I knew a Vietnamese guy named Ly, and like most people of Chinese descent he was a Buddhist, although I dare say S.E Asia has its share of Muslims and Christians.  Lee is one of the top ten common family names in China, so not sure where the Muslim reference comes from, as Vince Li has refused to speak.

From Wikipedia:

Taiwan

Family names in Taiwan of the Han Chinese heritage are similar to those in southeast China, as most families maintain family trees that are traceable to their origins in places such as Fujian and Guangdong. Taiwanese aborigines have also adopted Chinese names in the process of assimilation (see also Taiwanese name). The popularity distribution of family names in Taiwan as a whole differs somewhat from the distribution of names among all Han Chinese, with the family name Chen (陳) particularly common (generally about 11%). Local variations also exist.

The top ten most frequent family names in Taiwan, ranking in China, and common romanizations.

Name  ↓ Rank in Taiwan  ↓ Rank in China  ↓Pe̍h-ōe-jī  ↓ Common romanizations  ↓
1 5 Tân Chen, Chan
2 16 Lîm Lin, Lam
3 8 n̂g Huang, Wong, Hwang

8 4 Lâu Liu, Lau, Liou
