UPDATE.... Honduran Deligation makes headway.

A Honduran delegation is due to arrive in Washington and will be holding a press conference today. The deligation is hoping to speak with members of the OAS and other government bodies, intending to persuade world governments that the current government of Honduras is constitutionally legitimate.

However, the Obama Administration has thus far, refused to meet with any members of the interm government of Roberto Micheletti, as the administration only recognizes former president Zelaya.

There is speculation that former presidents Ricardo Maduro and Carlos Flores are also travelling to Washington to state the case for the new government, However, Cuban News and Marxist sites are reporting a very different story.  “According to the Bolivarian News Agency (ABN), Flores and Maduro decided to withdraw their support of the de facto regime of Roberto Micheletti because he has refused to comply with the decisions of international bodies and he refuses to hand over power to constitutional President Manuel Zelaya.”

There are no quotations from these presidents regarding the reports, so we must wait and see whether Maduro and Florez do indeed support the deposed president Zelaya.

If true, it would strengthen Zelaya's cause, if  false the quality of information being provided by these agencies is questionable and could increase instability within Honduras under false pretences.

UPDATE....

HONDURAS 5:34pm

Here is a press release from Senator Mel Martinez after a meeting with former Honduran President Ricardo Maduro.

“A very eloquent presentation was made by ex-President Ricardo Maduro and the other members of the delegation to bring to light the facts of the events in Honduras, which have not been fully known and discussed until now. The fact is that a very constitutional process took place but the appearance was harmed by the way President Zelaya was removed from the country. By Honduran operation of law, the president’s actions, undertaken by Zelaya himself, triggered several automatic constitutional actions resulting in his removal from office.

“Being where we are now, it is important we support the mediation being initiated by President Oscar Arias of Costa Rica. I don’t think it is clear whether President Zelaya should return to power; that is something the Honduran people and the mediation process should decide.”

Obama daily reveals the depth of his capacity to mouth one ideal and then quickly go back on it in practice.

How, in the spirit of compromise, can anyone hope to achieve a peaceful and just solution to this crisis with a policy such as this one?

I will speculate now that Obama identifies with his ousted Honduran president because there are many things that he would like to ram through congress against the will of the American people. Obama sees his own future in what has happened to Zelaya: rejection.

What needs to be done in Honduras is to move the elections up to November since the parties all have their candidates ready.

What we need to do now is let Obama do his thing, and watch how enough rope to hang himself will work out, meant figuratively, of course.
