UPDATE: Jewish Dems slam McCain's VP choice but Jewish Republicans praise choice
Reaction from Democrat groups to Palin being chosen as Republican VP running mate with McCain is now crystalising with the National Jewish Democratic Council making its views clear. The Pat Buchanon link is one that is emerging and could prove a way in for Democrats on the Alaskan housewife and mother image that is to the fore at the moment.
In a statement released Friday, The National Jewish Democratic Council called McCain's judgment in choosing Palin "lacking," and commented that she had "never spoken publicly about Israel."
The statement also claimed the Alaska governor was "totally out of step with Jewish public opinion" on the abortion issue.
But Republican Jewish opinion is very different and reflected in the newly headlined story as shown below:
"The Jewish community should be very excited that Sarah was selected. She has been very conscious of the Jewish community here in Alaska and now with the opportunity of her new position, she'll have the opportunity to look at the Jewish community globally," said Alaskan Republican Jewish Coalition member Terry Gorlick, who knows Palin well and has worked with her on several issues.
"Sarah's absolutely pro-Israel," he said, referring to conversations with her and comments she's made about Israel's security and its importance to the United States. He noted that as governor she signed a resolution honoring Israel for its 60th birthday
It's going to be a really interesting fight with the first Black candidate for president and the first woman candidate for VP lining up on opposite sides of the political spectrum. it will make great theatre whatever the result.

Interesting that this poster would select this small excerpt from an article praising Senator McCain's choice of Governor Palin. This is going to be a very dirty campaign. Here is the lead-in from the cited article:
Jewish Republicans, Alaskans praise McCain's VP choice
Aug. 30, 2008HILARY LEILA KRIEGER, JPost correspondent in DENVER , THE JERUSALEM POST
"Skipping over two Jewish politicians under consideration as vice presidential running mates, John McCain selected first-term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin Friday.
Palin, who has a reputation a reformer and high approval ratings but a low national profile, is the first female vice presidential nominee for the Republican party. Presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced his selection the day after Barack Obama accepted the Democratic presidential nomination, shifting attention to the GOP ahead of its convention opening in Minneapolis Monday.
Palin's background corresponds to McCain's image as a maverick, both by his making a surprise selection and by choosing someone who was willing to buck powerful members of her own local party to clean up government. Her lack of foreign policy or national security credentials, however, contrast with McCain¹s own record of military service and government focus in those arenas.
The choice left the two Jewish congressman reported to be on the list of possible VPs - Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor and Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman - out of luck, but several politically active Alaskan Jews praised Palin's ties to the community.
"The Jewish community should be very excited that Sarah was selected. She has been very conscious of the Jewish community here in Alaska and now with the opportunity of her new position, she'll have the opportunity to look at the Jewish community globally," said Alaskan Republican Jewish Coalition member Terry Gorlick, who knows Palin well and has worked with her on several issues."

Hi Joellerose,
I'm afraid that you are mistaken - the article that I drew an excerpt from was purely the one reporting on the Jewish Dems response to the VP choice:
"Jewish Dems slam McCain's VP choice"
This was the headline - I didn't make the headline up. What is further down now in the online edition is a link to what the Jerusalem Post calls a 'related story' - giving the Jewish Republican view - which is the post that you have put above - thanks for adding it here - I'll add it into the body of story.

I followed the link you supplied. How did it happen that you highlighted one story, while giving a link for another one?

When the story was first filed it was headlined that way and didn't have the Republican view - maybe they hadn't issued the statement at that time - so the story must have been updated with a new headline - I feel that this must have been the case as I looked at the talkback at the Jewish Post and found this which was a response to the first version by someone - that version has been replaced with the new story - I picked it up my highlighted story just 27 minutes after it going online - so it was the first version - shows how stories change as news develops and how journalists have to change their headline in line with the way an editor (or owner) wants to present the news. Thanks again! LF

You are to be complimented for being one of the few posters of political commentary who seems to be trying to present a fair picture.

LotusFlower, I like this story. It's good stuff. Good job on sourcing, excerpting and highlighting. :)
