UPDATED - Troy Davis Denied Clemency - Execution Set for September 23

The Georgia Pardon and Parole Board declined to issue a stay of execution for condemned man, Troy Davis, following its clemency hearing on September 12. Amnesty International published a statement today that Troy Davis is scheduled to be executed on September 23.

Davis was sentenced to death in 1992 for the murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail in Savannah, Georgia. According to Amnesty International, the case against him consisted only of witness testimony that contained inconsistencies, even at trial. Since then, all but two of the state’s nine witnesses from the trial have recanted or contradicted their testimony. Many of these witnesses have stated in sworn affidavits that they were pressured or coerced into testifying or signing statements. Mr. Davis has never been allowed to present the witness testimony in court and other evidence that surfaced since his conviction due to restraints on the number of appeals allowed.
Is this a case of "We know you may be innocent, but we are going to kill you anyway, because your evidence was slow in arriving"?

duo, I think your story has potential but needs some improvement. I've got a few suggestions, and if you give them a try, I'd be happy to remove this flag. This appears to be a duplicate story. Duplicate stories are not good for search engine indexing. Also, the headline issue (addressed in a separate message) could be changed for better engine recognition.

I am writing on behalf of justice for Troy Davis. I also want to thank you for all that you do for Georgia to help this stay a great state. Georgia has a very rich heritage, and it attracts people and corporations from all over the globe. Please don't allow our state to be marred with any accusations of Jim Crowe-type injustices while under your administration.
Sir, I am sure I do not have to recount for you the history of Mr. Davis' case and the facts that would make his execution without a new trial an atrocious act of injustice. Georgia does not need this. We do not need the international community and corporate enterprises from all over this nation to look at Georgia as being a backward, prejudice state, more interested in killing another black man than in upholding justice and the standards of America, where each citizen has been avowed with the inalienable right to life.
However citizens can forfeit their right to life by doing heinous crimes, such as Mr. Davis is accused of committing. But did he do it? Please do not allow his execution to proceed until that question can be answered with resounding confidence, Governor Perdue. To proceed with the execution while these questions of innocence remain would allow a horrible taint on our marvelous home, Georgia.

Since our US Congress has never afforded poor prison inmates federal appeal legal counsel for their federal retrials,they have effectively closed the doors on these tens of thousands of innocent citizens ever being capable of possibly exonerating themselves to regain their freedom through being granted new retrials.
This same exact unjust situation was happening in our Southern States when poor and mostly uneducated Black Americans were being falsely imprisoned for endless decades without the needed educational skills to properly submit their own written federal trial appeals.
This devious and deceptive judicial process of making our poor and innocent prison inmates formulate and write their own federal appeal legal cases for possible retrials on their state criminal cases,is still in effect today even though everyone in our US judicial system knows that without proper legal representation, these tens of thousands of innocent prison inmates will be denied their rightful opportunities of ever being granted new trials from our federal appeal judges !!
Sadly, the true US *legal* Federal Appeal situation that occurs when any of our uneducated American prison inmates are forced to attempt to submit their own written Federal Appeals (from our prisons nationwide) without the assistance of proper legal counsel, is that they all are in reality being denied their legitimate rights for Habeas Corpus with our US FEDERAL COURTS and will win any future Supreme Court Case concerning this injustice !
For our judicial system and our US Congressional Leaders Of The Free World to continue to pretend that this is a real and fair opportunity for our American Middle Class and Working Poor Citizens, only delays the very needed future change of Federal Financing of all these Federal appeals becoming a normal formula of Our American judicial system.
It was not so very long ago that Public Defenders became a Reality in this country.Prior that legal reality taking place, their were also some who thought giving anyone charged with a crime a free lawyer was a waste of taxpayer$$.
