OPINION - I am pleasantly surprised that the Canadian Courts agreed to deport this US deserter.  Canada accepted "contientious objectors" during the Vietnam conflict but they were fleeing the draft.  This coward joined the armed forces; he wasn't drafted.

He says he felt morally obligated to leave the US once he learned that he would be deployed to Iraq.  So his moral objection was not to being a member of the US National Guard.  And it was certainly not to cashing the cheques that US taxpayers paid him to serve their country.  His moral objection only popped up when he was asked to do the work for which he had been paid.  It would seem to me that if you morally object to war you probably shouldn't join the armed forces.

Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out, Corey.  And for any other fraud artists that think they can flee to Canada's open arms when the get called on to fight the war that they sihgned up for, stay out!  We don't want your lying, defrauding, coward asses either.  Maybe France will take you.

Corey Glass: 'In almost two years I've been here I've been self-sufficient, and I've got many friends and I've got a life here.'

TORONTO - Corey Glass, a former U.S. National Guardsman who deserted to Canada in 2006 to avoid serving in Iraq, was told Wednesday that his application to stay in Canada has been rejected.

A spokesperson for Citizenship and Immigration Canada confirmed Glass has been ordered to leave the country.

At a Toronto news conference, Glass pleaded with the federal government to support his cause.

"In almost two years I've been here, I've been self-sufficient and I've got many friends and I've got a life here," he said. "I don't think it's fair that I should be returned to the United States to face unjust punishment for doing what I thought I was morally obligated to do."

Michelle Robidoux, a spokesperson for the War Resisters Support Campaign, said Glass could be deported by June 12.

Last year, the Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear the case of two other Americans - Jeremy Hinzman and Brandon Hughey - who sought refugee status here after deserting the U.S. army in 2004 to avoid being deployed to Iraq.

The court's ruling backed previous ones by the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Immigration and Refugee Board.

Hinzman and Brandon Hughey argued they face persecution in their home country because of their political opinion.

The Federal Court of Appeal ruled, however, the two men did not deserve refugee status in Canada because they come from a democratic country with an accountable and just system for dealing with deserters.

The War Resisters Support Campaign has been assisting U.S. military personnel who come to Canada since 2004.

The organization's website lists 13 U.S. war resisters who have fled to Canada.

eastvanray, I like this story. It's good stuff. Gee, hard to judge this one, course why join the military, unless you are prepared to fight.  Did he think joining the army was like a video game, or dancing with the stars Reality TV?  The Stark Reality is Soldiers may be called upon to give their lives for their country and serve overseas, including combat.   He is a big boy, and it is time to take his medicine.  Hiding behind Canada's Generous Skirt may have held true during Liberal Reign, but Today, we expect you to hold to your word.  If not, don't come whining to Mother Canada, she has enough sons and daughters dying overseas to pay you mind!

You don't know the whole story to why he went to Canada. Maybe he thought the USA was fighting a just war, to find out later he was lied to. He too sees the lies of the State, and the State has its tentacles everywhere. Maybe we need to realize Canada is just another maple leaf state of the USA, doing its bidding to the US Federal Crime Bosses. Not much of a difference in Canada and the US these days A.

Funny he was willing to cash those blood money cheques right up to the point he was asked to actually do what he had been paid to do.  If he quit even a day before he was asked to report for active duty then I would say he has some small case.  But he didn't he kept on cahsing those cheques.  I guess he was selling his soul.  Regardless, he is nothing more than a coward.  If you do not believe in going to war then do not join the Armed Forces.  That seems pretty simple.
