US Military Deaths in Afghanistan Region now at 642

The U.S. Department of Defense has released figures of Deaths in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.  The total number as of 6 July 2009 is 642.  The Department last updated its figures at 10 a.m. EDT.

Of those, the military reports 475 were killed by hostile action.

Outside of that region another 68 were killed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  3 of those were as a result of hostile action.

There were also 4 CIA and one civilian military deaths.

The latest deaths reported by the military:

Seven soldiers died Monday in Afghanistan:

- Four soldiers died in a roadside bombing in Kunduz province.

- Two soldiers died in a roadside blast in southern Afghanistan.

- A soldier died after a firefight with militants in the east.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

- Two Army soldiers died Saturday at Combat Outpost Zerok, Afghanistan, after an insurgent attack. Both were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.

Killed were Pfc. Justin A. Casillas, 19, Dunnigan, Calif. and Pfc. Aaron E. Fairbairn, 20, Aberdeen, Wash.

- Lance Cpl. Charles S. Sharp, 20, of Adairsville, Ga., died Thursday during combat in Helmand province, Afghanistan; assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

As of Monday, July 6, 2009, at least 642 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Of those, the military reports 475 were killed by hostile action.

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 68 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, three were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.

There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.
