US military detains 9 suspected militants in Iraq

In a major vitory, American forces have nabbed 9 Al-Qaida militant in Iraq. One of the arrested militant is head of the bombing cell of the Sunni extremist group.


The U.S. military says it has detained nine people suspected of involvement in the al-Qaida in Iraq group.

The military says the suspects were detained in raids Friday in Baghdad and the cities of Beiji and Mosul, which lie north of the capital. One of the detainees is the alleged head of a bombing cell of the Sunni extremist group.

Four of the suspected militants were arrested during an operation Friday that targeted a man who acts as a liaison between senior leaders of al-Qaida in Iraq.
