The brilliant Gore Vidal speaks his mind in Madrid, in an interview for El Mundo.–

–IT will take the the United States a century to recover from the damage wreaked by President George W Bush, US writer Gore Vidal said in an interview published today.

"The president behaved like a virtual criminal but we didn't have the courage to sack him for fear of violating the American constitution,'' Mr Vidal told the El Mundo newspaper.

The author, a trenchant critic of the US-led invasion of Iraq, said it would take the United States 100 years to repair the damage caused by Bush.

"We live in a dictatorship. We have a fascist government ...which controls the media,'' he said.

Maireid Sullivan, I like this story. It's good stuff.

But George W has not been the first criminal. The 100 years will not start till the US learns to mind its own business, stop trying to be the vigilante global policeman and acknowledges the fact that cultures and ways of life differ.

Abso "bludy" lutely right on, Matte! :)

And we're telling them now -in no uncertain terms.

Gone are the days of diplomats managing foreign policy communications - the people are going direct - and in droves..

you know the saying - tease a dog but don't be surprised when it turns and bites you. The US has been doing it since WWII. (As has Israel - cannot wait for Iran to give them a smack around the ears, whining buggers they are!)

So true! I think "the whole world" must need a break from this ugly whining!

We've been "polite" for too long!

You are very welcome, Maireid!  I find the opinions expressed here quite valid. Unfortunate, but true!

What a bunch of nonsense, anti-Americanism and antisemitism.  President Bush will be remembered in history as the man who saved western civilization.

If by "saving it" you mean making us all the targets of hatred and violence around the world, then sure.  He "saved it".

Yes eastvanray - Bush merely repainted the bullseye on the back of every American.

Now the American people have the opportunity to take steps to vote in an Administration that has the capacity to be conciliatory, respectful, who understands that dialog beats aggression  (just look at the progress China has made with N.Korea - wasn't Condi pissed off about that!)  and that  maybe even an apology could be in order for the past 45 years of uncalled for interventions.

The next test will be Iran. Will the Administration once again show what fools they are by using diplomacy and not aggression? Time to show that Christianity is indeed a true element of the American approach.

Gore Vidal knows what he's talkin' about, that's for sure. Nice quotes!

Maireid Sullivan, Thank you for the heads up on Gore Vidal's speech. With that said by Vidal can we as a nation (U.S.) really afford to have it get worse with them still in power and all the unknown things this current administration has done that yet not been heard of or see the light of day. The U.S. will be lucky if its only 100 years to recover.
