Is the US Planning to Attack Iran?

Is the US Planning to Attack Iran?

This has always been a point of conjecture.  If, the IAEA does not fulfill its demands of Iran to terminate its nuclear ambitions should the US (under Bush) go it alone and destroy Iran's nuclear infrastructure?  Or, possibly, should the Israeli's under the rule of self-protection carry-out preemptive strikes to attack and destroy it?  Or, should Iran be allowed to create a nuclear arsenal?  And, if so, do you feel Iran can be trusted with WMD's?  Your comments are welcome. . .

Dutch sabotage agent recalled from Iran over “impending” US attack

30 Aug.: A Dutch AIVD Secret Service operation underway in Iran in recent years has been halted in view of “impending US plans to attack Iran,” within weeks, writes Joost de Haas in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

The AIVD operation aimed to infiltrate and sabotage the weapons [and nuclear] industry in the Islamic Republic. The US was expected to make a decision within weeks to attack nuclear plants with unmanned aircraft, used to avoid risking the lives of air crews and warplanes. DEBKAfile’s military sources report this would be the first time drones operated by remote control were used against major strategic targets, necessary in Israel’s case to preserve its air fleet and flight crews for protecting the country against reprisal from Iran’s allies. Syria and the Lebanese Hizballah have stockpiled thousands of rockets for this purpose.
According to DEBKAfile’s sources, the expectation disclosed by the Dutch newspaper would explain the fresh spate of threats from Iran.

DEBKAfile’s Iran sources report a shakeup is in progress in the Islamic Republic’s top military command.

Amir (Maj. Gen.) Seyed Abdollrahim Mousavi was named acting chief of staff of the armed forces – a new post created as backup in case the army chief comes to harm in combat.

Amir Mohamad Hosseyn Dadras becomes deputy chief of staff for coordination.

Amir Reza Pourdastan is the new commander of the army’s ground corps.

BallyZACA, I like this story. It's good stuff. Somehow I think the USA's shopping basket on war is pretty full right now, and the checkout aisle clearly says 5 world conflicts or less.  Attacking Iran, who have never ever invaded any country in it's existence may get sympathy from other Arab states who may side with Iran and the US unfortunately may find out who they previously thought were friendly nations are really their foes.

Quite true… thanks for your input Barry.  It brings to mind the old adage “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.”  Personally, I don’t believe we should attempt to find out.  With that said, a nuclear <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Iran would become a threat to the entire Middle East, and of course the shipping lanes of half the world’s oil and reserves.  It’s a tuff call... but, economically speaking (say's David S. Landis, "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations") the more technically sophisticated nations would suffer the worst from war due to our dependence on technology.  Assume the push will come to a shove, eventually, followed by something a whole lot worst.  The "Stone Age" didn't end due to a lack of stones!"

No, but the Stone Age ended most likely with Intervillage Ballistic Spears

BallyZACA, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Why is the US so worried about Iran and nuclear weapons, Pakistan seems far more unstable right now.  Oh, and India has nuclear weapons as does Israel.  We should be far more worried about those nutbars who are hoping to bring about "the rapture" early.

Bush will have to if Obama wins.

I think we should put Bush and Cheney under "House Arrest" until after the November election so they cannot do any more damage before leaving office.

the house may be foreclosed on in this market.

That should be a statement not a question.

BallyZACA, I like this story. Weired stuff, Drone war...., small hamburger helper,  you meant for sure IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency Vienna) (not IATA ?)

Right Solar… sorry, bout’ that… got my alphabet boys mixed-up.  If, an attack is weeks away, as the DEBKAfile states (a pretty reliable intelligence source), then it would most likely take place before the end of September.  As a calculated guess based on my own perspective it probably won’t happen, unless, the McCain/Palin ticket is behind in the poles.  It would be left for them to resolve provided they win the WH.  If, they’re behind in the poles the attack is more likely, bringing an end to the Obama/Biden challenge.  At this point Bush isn’t worried about his legacy, right or wrong, he will (like me) be long gone before historians get around to rating him.

Bally:

What is this nonsense?

Or, possibly, should the Israeli's under the rule of self-protection carry-out preemptive strikes to attack and destroy it?

Flip this around and ask yourself "Should the Russians or the Pakistanis, or the Indians, or Korea or any nation with Nuclear weapons carry out a  Pre-emptive nuclear strike against a nation with a proven history of preemptive strikes against its neighbors? A proven history of waging war ; a proven history of ignoring the rule of law; a proven history of apartheid; a proven history striking terror into other nations on the flimsiest of excuses; a proven history of crime? After all, didn't Israel attack Syria, wage war against Lebanon; kill the Osirus nuclear plant in Iraq; commit mass murder against Sabra, Shatilla, Jenine and other places, shoot rockets into apartment buildings ; ignore the charter etc. etc. etc. When did Iran ever threaten acts of terror against Israel?

Hey, “Neander” get a grip… nobody mentioned a preemptive nuclear strike, either I or the article.  It would be conventional weapons of the deep-penetration delayed explosive devices, aka, “bunker-busters!”  More precisely the GBU-28.  If not, we're all f****d!

0
BallyZACA

Actually, the GBU-28 is a 5,000 lb. laser-guided bomb rated for penetration of 100 feet of earth, or 20 feet of solid concrete.  The newest weapon is a 30,000 lb. bomb called the "Massive Ordnance Penetrator", or, in military-speak -- the MOP.

The MOP is the the military's largest conventional bomb, a super "bunker-buster" capable of destroying hardened targets deep underground. The one-line explanation for the request said it is in response to "an urgent operational need from theater commanders."

The MOP is a massive bomb -- 20 feet long and encased in 3.5 inch thick high-performance steel.  It is designed to penetrate up to 200 feet underground before exploding.

We need to worry about the Saudis machinations, sure they were glad that we went into Iraq and dealt with Saddam for them. and set US up for a Islam Military target and helped ruin our economy.

The West can not afford a nuclear Iran.

0
merlingraycat

We also cannot afford another war!  Or neuclear catastrophe!  Let's end the Iraq War first, get the Republicans out of Washington, restart the economy, before we start any more Wars we can't finish.
