NP Rank:
US Senate confirms alleged 'pawn of porn industry' David Ogden
Alleged 'pawn of porn industry' David Ogden was nominated by US President Barack Obama for Deputy Attorney General, the second highest position in the US Justice Department. Ogden was confirmed despite GOP porn opposition.
David Ogden was confirmed 65-28 for the second-ranking position of deputy attorney general, and Thomas Perelli was approved 72-20 for the third-ranking slot of associate attorney general. Attorney General Eric Holder had expressed concerns that he was operating the Justice Department without his top deputies.
Sen. Robert Casey, D-Pa., joined 27 Republicans to oppose Ogden, while all the opposition to Perelli came from Republicans.
Nearly all the debate on the nominees focused on Ogden, who represented defendants in pornography cases.
"I felt it was a scurrilous attack on him," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Leahy and other supporters argued that Ogden's legal representation did not reflect his personal views, and they pointed out that Ogden has argued forcefully for protecting children from sexual abuse.
According to F.R.A.M.E.D. (Fathers Rights and Men Ending Discrimination), former Georgia State Senator and Family Rights Advocate, Nancy Schaefer, issued an alert opposing the nomination of Ogden for the reasons that Ogden has on many occasions represented the pornography industry along with its interests, Ogden supports using taxpayer money to fund abortions, and
"The most recent pressing reason is because of [Ogden's] belief that the rules found in the anti-family U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child are already binding on the United States, even though this treaty has never been sent to the U.S. Senate for ratification.
Children and families are already suffering deliberate destruction at the hands of Child Protective Services via U.S. Federal law!"

Yeah, I agree. It shows a lack of understanding about the role of defence lawyers. Fair trial is just that: ensuring the best possible defence is given to the defendant. What a load of cobblers to attack him for doing his job. And a person's private moral values are their affair, anyway! It's their actions, their skills, heir judgements, their ability to work as a team: those are the requirements on which they should be assessed.
