US Senators Call To End America's Ban On Gay Men Donating Blood
United States Senators are calling to end America's ban on Gay men donating blood. Campaign senators, led by Senator John Kerry, are expressing concerns over a 1983 rule the United States put in place at the height of fears about AIDS in the 1980's.
The 1983 rule is “outdated, medically and scientifically unsound”, they argued in a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) yesterday.
Senator John Kerry, who is leading the campaign, said in a statement: “Not a single piece of scientific evidence supports the ban. A law that was once considered medically justified is today simply outdated and needs to end, just as last year we ended the travel ban against those with HIV.”
AFP reports that the letter said: “We write today to express our concerns regarding outdated, medically and scientifically unsound deferral criteria for prospective blood donors.
“With hospitals and emergency rooms across the country in constant and urgent need of blood products, we believe certain blood donor deferral policies should be reviewed and appropriately modified and modernised while ensuring the blood supply meets the highest possible standards.”
Mr Kerry’s office said that men who had had gay sex since 1977 were barred from donating blood, yet people who had had heterosexual sex with someone known to carry the HIV virus were only banned from donating blood for one year.
FDA Claims the 'deferral policy' is based on current science and data, not a donor's sexual orientation.
In response, the FDA said: “The agency understands and respects the desire of everyone, including MSM [men who have sex with men] to donate blood and save lives.
“While FDA appreciates concerns about perceived discrimination, our decision to maintain the deferral policy is based on current science and data, and does not give weight to a donor’s sexual orientation.”
Gay men also face a blood donation ban in the UK. In November 2009 the Guardian reported:
Pressure is mounting on the Department of Health and the National Blood Service to end the blanket lifetime ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood. This sweeping prohibition was originally introduced in the early 1980s in response to the advent of the HIV pandemic. Well-intended at the time, it is now increasingly seen as a panic, knee-jerk over-reaction.
A review of the UK policy is to conclude this year.

This should end. As much as they (red cross et all) ask for blood donations they should accept all those which prove healthy. If the blood is bad they can discard it just like they do with that of those whom already donate, if applicable.
I live in a city known for its medical facilities. There is always someone sort of advert or volunteer encouraging donation. And we sure do need more blood. Especially that double bloodcell type.

Thank you for reading, commenting, and for the rec, Grace! I should have mentioned in the article that as early as 2006, The American Red Cross, America's Blood Centers reported before an FDA Sponsored workshop "...that the ban on men who have had sex with other men (MSM), even once, since 1977 from ever donating blood "is medically and scientifically unwarranted.""
