A former US soldier, Pfc. Steven Dale Green, was convicted last week of orchestrating the gang rape of Abeer Qassim Hamza, a 14 year old girl, and the brutal murder of her and her entire family; 5-year old sister Hadeel Qassim Hamza, mother Fakhriya Taha Muhasen, and father Qassim Hamza Rasheed, while serving in Iraq.  Steven Green now faces the death penalty for his horrific crime.  The sentencing phase of his trial began May 11, 2009.

If Green is given the death penalty he will be the first US soldier ever tried for war crimes in a civilian court to be sentenced to execution.  Four of his co-conspirators are now serving multiple life sentences after three confessed and the other was convicted in a separate trial.

Three of the other convicted soldiers also participated in the gang rape of Abeer Qassim Hamza.  Spc. James Barker was given 90 years, Sgt. Paul Cortez was sentenced to 100 years, and Pfc. Jesse Spielman was hit with 110 years in prison.  All three directly men participated in the rape and murders that Steven Green planned.

A fourth soldier, Pfc. Bryan Howard, was given a 27-month sentence.  Howard did not actively participate in the planning of the crime and did not commit rape or murder, but he did act as a look out for the others.   Charges were dropped against a fifth participant, Sgt. Anthony Yribe, who also had no prior knowledge of the crimes and was not an active participant until the cover up.

In the trial against Steven Green evidence was entered and testimony was given that proved he stalked Abeer Qassim Hamza and her family for some time before the crime.  The rape and murders were fully premeditated by Green and the others and the family, living in a rural area in Iraq, was targeted well in advance of the date of the 2005 crime.

Prosecutors said he and others in his unit plotted an attack on an Iraqi family. Green herded the parents and younger sister of 14-year-old Abeer al-Janabi into another room of a house while two accomplices raped her. He then gunned down her parents and her 6-year-old sister, before joining in the rape and killing the teenager.

The crimes happened in the Mahmoudiya area of Iraq, south of Baghdad, in 2006. Last week, a federal jury in McCracken County, Kentucky, deliberated for more than 10 hours before convicting Green for murder, rape, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, according to the court's Web site. Guilty on all 17 counts.

Four other former soldiers are in prison for their roles in the crime and the cover-up that followed.

Pvt. 1st Class James Barker, Sgt. Paul Cortez, Pvt. 1st Class Jesse Spielman and Pvt. 1st Class Bryan Howard received sentences ranging from 27 months to 110 years, with the possibility of parole in 10 years in the most severe cases.

This is Sad!!!

I think it is such a shocking story but what I find equally disturbing is how little this has been covered in North American media.  If Green is given a death sentence it will be the FIRST time a US soldier tried for war crimes in a civilian court will be executed. THAT is hugely significant.

Why can't people respect other people's life. It is very sad that a life of a 14 year old girl and her family is taken away by this barbaric soldier.

I know.  It is a disgusting crime.  The details are extremely horrific but I chose not to go into them here.  Steven Green was quoted as stating "you probably think I am a monster" and he is one!

See the CNN report with the full details

What a cruel world we are living in! They also killed her 6 year sister! What a coward! I think death penalty is too soft for him!

I agree, in some cases it is hard to want to show mercy of any kind.  This is one of those cases.

Sick minds, that.s all that comes to mind here.

This reminds me of the 'incident' at Mai Lai village.  American soldiers wiped out a whole village to cover up their crimes.  Does anyone remember Lieutenant Calley?
