US teacher is suspended for letting pupils read bestseller

This teacher must have a noble intention but it turned out against her. Although she had sought the permission from Parents before introducing this book but her action has backfired.

An Indiana teacher who used a much lauded bestseller, The Freedom Writers Diary, to try to inspire under-performing high-school students has been suspended from her job without pay for 18 months.

The effective book ban by the school authorities in Perry Township has outraged teachers and education reformers.

The Writers Diary, a series of true stories written by inner-city teenagers, was put together by a teacher, Erin Gruwell, and has been celebrated as a model for transforming young lives. It was made into a film with Hilary Swank last year.

this is outrageous. i do hope the teachers jointly fight the victim's case! unfortunately i have not read the book but have watched the film, which is brilliant.

Sanjay Jha, I like this story. It's good stuff.  Absolutely ridiculous!!!  What is so bad about that book where the teacher would be suspended?  I remember in high school our creative writing teacher let us watch "The Graduate"...all about a mother seducing her daughter's friend--later boyfriend.  Figures it is in Indiana, too.  I live here and that side of town is nothing but a bunch of HILLBILLIES.
