Gadgetoff 2007 - John Abele (Part 1)

The USS GrunionWWII submarine, has been found off the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.

As reported two years ago today, an Object off Alaska coast may be WWII sub, it has now been proved true.

Six Michiganders died on the Grunion, which went down on July 30, 1942. Lt. Cmdr. Mannert L. Abele's sons financed a search last year, which resulted in the finding and proving of the wreckage in August 2007.

The Navy states that 70 men died onboard the Grunion.

Exactly why the Grunion sunk is not known. It lies some 3,200 feet below surface; there are no plans to move the submarine.

Family members of the Grunion’s crew will hold a memorial service Oct. 11 in Cleveland.

The following Michiganders perished on the Grunion: Seaman 2C Arnold Post, 18, of Midland; Torpedo's Mate 3C Richard McCutcheon, 18, of Detroit; Seaman 2C David Nathaniel Swartwood, 19, of Flint; Seaman 2C Byron Traviss, 17, of Detroit; Seaman 2C Loyal Ryan Jr., 17, of Lansing, and Ensign William Cuthbertson Jr., 27, of Frankenmuth.
