USS New York,  a battleship that was partially made out of the steel recovered from the sight of the 911 World Trade Centre attacks, sailed into New York Harbour on its first sailing today. The ship's bulk had 7.5 tonnes of recycled Twin Tower steel incorporated into it, making it a functional monument for the 911 victims. The total cost of the ship construction came to $1 billion. On approach to the Harbour, USS New York fired a 21-gun salute near Ground Zero.

According to recent reports requests to serve aboard the ship were higher than any other vessel in the Navy with 13% of those serving aboard the crew of 361 sailors  from New York, a percentage much higher than typically found for one city aboard other ships currently in service.

Rescue workers and families of those killed in the attack gathered on the Manhattan waterfront to watch the 684ft warship glide up the Hudson River past the World Trade Center site with its sailors standing at attention on the deck.

One of the Ground Zero rescuers, joined the Navy after 911 and is a crew member of the New York.

There are many things to love about the story of this ship. I highly recommend the coverage of the new ship, USS New York at Yahoo! News also.

Let’s hope that ship never has a fire on it or it will fall apart and sink in a matter of seconds ;)
