Valley Swim Club-Huntingdon Valley: Are Racism Allegations Fair?
The sad story of the 65 kids of Creative Steps Day Camp verses racism at The Valley Swim Club may seem like something from a near century ago, but it actually happened in 2009, when the US is being led by its first African-American president.
As NowPublic editor Karen Hatter reported The Valley Swim Club in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania accepted a $1900 fee from Creative Steps Day Camp only to turn 65 young kids away over a stated issue of "complexion." The Valley Swim Club not only sent the kids away, it refunded the fee and banned the kids of Creative Steps from ever returning.
The story smacks of a kind of racism most of us would like to believe is dead in the USA, shining a bright light on the fact that racism is still alive and well. The Valley Swim Club racism case has not gone unnoticed in Washington. US senator Arlen Specter announced plans to launch a discrimination investigation against The Valley Swim Club.
Arlen Specter was not the only person in Pennsylvania who found what appears to be a Valley Swim Club ban on minority kids outrageous. Local groups and businesses stepped up and expressed their disgust in a proactive way; Girard College boarding school offered their pool to the Creative Steps kids, and local ice cream parlor Gumdrops & Sprinkles gave the day camp a party of candy and ice cream making for free.
The banning has caused so much controversy that U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) plans to launch an investigation into the discrimination claim.
"The allegations against the swim club as they are reported are extremely disturbing," Specter said in a statement. "I am reaching out to the parties involved to ascertain the facts. Racial discrimination has no place in America today."
A protest is planned outside the gates of the Valley Swim Club Thursday night (July 9, 2009).
An investigation into the matter may be the only way that the truth of the events can come out and The Valley Swim Club has said it will cooperate. The Valley Swim Club has remained closed since the incident was exposed in the press and members have stepped forward to clarify the club's position. The club has repeatedly stated that race was not a factor in the banning of the Creative Steps kids.
If the position of The Valley Swim Club is to be believed, racism was not the reason the kids were banned... it was a matter of another "ism," age-ism. Adult members of the club, many of whom are seniors, say they objected to having large groups of children swimming at the pool regardless of their race. Many of these members have stepped forward saying the use of the word "complexion" in the official Valley Swim Club press statement has been misunderstood.
Club members, who were at the pool on the day of the incident, came forward Thursday to defend the organization.
"This has nothing to do with race," member Lori Slowinski said. "I paid my money for a private swim club…if they're gonna have it out to camps, then I want my money back."
Jim Flynn went right to the club president after the kids took the plunge into the pool.
"I was the first person to talk to the president, because the pool was overcrowded," said Flynn. "As members we have nothing to hide. There's good people here."
Daniel Veres, a 16-year old Hispanic teen who is also a member, says the entire situtation is just a misunderstanding.
"We're not judgemental, we're just friendly," Veres said of the mostly white club.
For the children involved, the entire situation has left them simply sad and confused.
The Valley Swim Club blames a poor choice of words on the part of its representatives for the perception that race was a factor in the decision to ban the kids of Creative Steps Day Camp. For its part, The Valley Swim Club-Huntingdon Valley has unequivocally refuted all allegations of racism and has replaced its entire website with a single page statement which reads:
The Valley Club is deeply troubled by the recent allegations of racism which are completely untrue. We had originally agreed to invite the camps to use our facility, knowing full well that the children from the camps were from multi-ethnic backgrounds. Unfortunately, we quickly learned that we underestimated the capacity of our facilities and realized that we could not accommodate the number of children from these camps. All funds were returned to the camps and we will re-evaluate the issue at a later date to determine whether it can be feasible in the future.
Our Valley Club deplores discrimination in any form, as is evidenced by our multi-ethnic and diverse membership. Whatever comments may or may not have been made by an individual member is an opinion not shared by The Valley Club Board.
What do you think? Was racism a factor or was it really a matter of adults not wanting large groups of kids at the pool? Please comment and let us know if you believe The Valley Swim Club's hindsight explanation.
Do you accept that the statement "There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion … and the atmosphere of the club" has been misunderstood due to poor word choice? Or do you think this is all nothing more than poorly executed damage control? Racism or no, you tell us...

Unbelievably troubling, unthinkable, irresponsible, and and OUTDATED WAY OF THINKING!!!!!!!!!! I cannot wait for all these "OLD TIMERS" who hold fast to the racist way of thinking to KICK THE BUCKET and leave the rest of us to join together. My BIRACIAL children will live a better life
FOLKS, LET US LEARN A LESSON FROM THIS HURTFUL AND EMBARRASSING EVENT!!!!!!!!

YOU SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. PERIOD. END OF STORY.

I can't believe that in 2009 we are actually sitting here reading about this, those kids should not have to be subjected to those type of remarks or treatment, they paid good $ to use these facilities, and for the club to say they quickly learned they didn't have the capacity to meet thier needs is the STUPIDEST excuse I have ever heard. I think some of the memebers of this POOL CLUB should actually trade their memeberships in and become members of the KKK.
My daughter is biracial and it is not her fault she has a black father and a white mother, she did not ask to be brought into this world. Kids should not be mistreated becuase of the color of thier skin - no one for that matter should be mistreated because of the color of their skin. That is the problem with racism, certain adults can't change their views and they in turn instill them on their children. A child is a beautiful creation and they are our future, if they are raised to dislike people simply because of the color of their skin, what kind of future do we have? We as AMERICANS voted the first Black President into Office, yet we are still reading about racism - and this is pretty serious, people actually pulled their kids out of the water because there were black kids getting in the pool - I really had no idea people still really thought that way. I mean I know it's out there but to that extent?? I am deeply disappointed in this club and hope that here in Berkley, MI my daughter never has to experience that.

Can President Obama withdraw all black and hispanic soldiers in harm's way and send the racist valley club parents and staff to far-off meatgrinders instead? Then they can either show arabs and afghans how superior white power is, or provide some humor by becoming carrion. Either ways, good riddance to bad rubbish!

Why is it that blacks can have their own organization, clubs, associations and pagents that exclude whites, and that is thought of as fine, but whites cannot do the same without being tagged as "racist"?
I think the double standard, and reverse discrimination/racism sucks. If Blacks can have their own organizations that exclude whites, then whites should be able to have a all white association, club, pagent, association ect without having any problems.
I don't see whites being allowed into NAACP, Ms/Mr Black America, all black fraternities.sororities or anything else "black". It is time White people were allowed, without the accusation of "racist", to be proud of OUR race, and have our own, all white, exclusive clubs and organizations.

OK Ranger,
I've read each of your comments, and I think you may want to know what you are talking about before you speak. There are white members of the NAACP, and for that matter whites can join black fraternities and sororities. Whites were instrumental in beginning the NAACP when it was established. No one is stopping anyone from joining any of these organizations. This is America so there are other nationalities. Anyone who has not realized or dealt with that reality by now is going to be pretty miserable...that's how you come across in your posts.

The only whites in the NAACp are those needed for accounting, public affairs ect. There are no white members. Same with black fraternities and sororities, Black miss America/Mr America ect. And, I do not see a "National Association for the Advancement of White People" anywhere-why? because of the outcry from the Black and politically correct white portion of not just America, but the world.I also dont see a "congressional white congress",the dual standards are bull. People and establishments should either ALL be allowed to have their own clubs, ect, or no one has elitist exclusive clubs.
Whites are not overtly barred from joining them to avoid what could be termed"racism" if the whites chose to pursue it,which they dont. They would just let it drop.Blacks, on the other hand, do not drop it. They play it up for the press and cameras to gain sympathy. It is so obvious and sickening. The kids in the club were so obviously coached on what to say, how to act, and to try to cry, probably by the parents, to gain footing for a possible lawsuit, that it really isnt funy.
White people should be able to have their own clubs, associations, just like the blacks do, or NO ONE should be able to. Simple as that.

The NAACP was founded by Blacks and Whites. My boss when I worked my way through college was a member (he was White) and he was proud to be a part of the oldest civil rights organization in our nation; his father was a trustee of an HBCU.
The NAACP's name reflects both the context of the time. Part of the reason they were established was to expose and end the campaign of racial terrorism (lasted 100 years) that began with the end of Reconstruction.
As for clubs I come from Chicago the most ethnic of all cities. There are Irish, Polish, Italian, German, Lithuanian and other clubs, organizations, museums, parades and neighborhood festivals. All of those organizations have exclusively white members and there are no plans to end St. Patricks day, Columbus Day, VonStuben Day, close the Lithunain museum. I have never heard of anyone suing the German Police Association or the Irish American Police Officer's Association either - my uncles and cousins who serve as Chicago Police officers have friends who are Irish Police Officers in that organization they are not bothered at all.
I think the double standard is all in your head. Your paranoid perceptions will only change with the help of a good therapist.

Have you considered the clan? Your viewpoints are ignorant to the fact- people would not have had to establish their own if inclusion was permitted in "white" groups to start with- DUH!!
at 23:39 on July 10th, 2009
Once Again Ranger Craig you are wrong.... There are hundreds of white members of the NAACP!! Also, white are allowed to pledge black fraternities and sororities!! Stop showing your ignorance!!
at 17:16 on July 14th, 2009
Ranger, are you seriously crying about not being exclusive? Quick history lesson-the only reason why the NAACP, black sororities or pagents were created is because african-americans were considered less than human and we deserved the right to feel pride in OUR race as well. Your race has always had the edge on privilege. Now back to the swim club-this has nothing to do with pride and everything to do with the United States of America living up to it's name.

How many white people have tried to join the NAACP or any other predominantly African-American organization? There are white students at Historically Black Colleges, and if someone asked to join an African-American organization probably they would not be denied.
Regardless, this club signed a contract and they should have known how many people would be in the group. They also could have done some research on the DayCare if they were in fact concerned about their skin color beforehand, and not signed a contract. The club is already 99%-100% white so they have their own white organization. However, it was wrong of them to breach the contract and also for them to treat those children that way.

i dont feel that it was a racist issue. this card has been thrown around sooooo many times and for soooo long that it is so easy to get what you want when you use the word racist. unfortunately now , this club is scarred for life because of the false accusation and all of its members will carry the big R on their chest. and to all the whites that are screaming the big R , why dont you go to the inner city of phillie and walk the streets and take all the poor children that couldnt go to that pool and bring them and their families to your house and build a pool for them there if you think they were treated so unfairly. go ahead, see how far you get walking the streets of the hood to show how much you care.impress me by taking donations to build a pool in your back yard so they can come swim. jesse and al can help you raise the money .
at 14:14 on July 10th, 2009
As the director of a child care learning center this saddens me. Children are children....and I guess I'm color blind. Our children at my center have their own pool on the property. One of my summer camp children made the comment today, "Tell Ms. Tammi to call the kids and tell them to come swim in our pool." I wish this was possible. Remember folks small minded people have small minded ideas.
at 14:44 on July 10th, 2009
The fact that the president accepted a fee as payment for the contract and then wants us to believe that he had no idea so many kids would be attending thereby overextending capacity is the lamest excuse I have ever heard. We are to believe he entered the contract and never asked how many children would be attending, come on, Man Up, simply admit you subcumbed to the pressure from some ( not all) members with racist attitudes and instead of standing up to the them, You are sorry for your cowardly act!!!

John Duesler should be terminated from his position. It is pretty clear to me that he is a racist overseeing a racist club. I wonder what is the ethnic makeup of the club? I think that would speak volumes

Quote:"John Duesler should be terminated from his position. It is pretty clear to me that he is a racist overseeing a racist club. I wonder what is the ethnic makeup of the club? I think that would speak volumes"
YEAH!!!! If it's "pretty clear" to you, then screw the evidence!!!!!! Screw the facts!! Screw the truth!!!
If it's "pretty clear" to lanko007, then they MUST BE RACIST!!! Right???

John Duesler is an Obama supporter who was leader of the O-Positive Program Team during the Presidential election. O-Positive was made up of volunteers coming from the Be The Change-Baederwood group. All this germinated from the Barack Obama Campaign Headquarters, that was located in the Baederwood Shopping Center in Suburban Philadelphia.
Do with that information what you will.

Copy of message to Senator Specter:
Thank you for launching an investigation into the private swim club which denied access to minority children: their action has sparked nationwide outrage.
I saw the club's spokesman on the news. He denied that it was a racial issue; he said the pool was simply overwhelmed by the numbers. But the group that came to use the pool had an agreement to allow their sixty-five children to enter.
Sixty-five.
The club knew how many would be coming and had agreed in advance.
It was only after they arrived and the members and management saw them that the kids were told to leave.
Thank you for your work to correct this wrong.

I think it's high time that we gave people the benefit of the doubt before we rush to hate. When these people used the word complexion, if they have any brains at all, they did not mean it in the racist way it appeared. My impression from a news story I just watched on tv that interviewed both sides of this situation. They seem like they are hurting. I can't imagine as a white man dedicated to helping the cause of equality for all making such a mistake that the whole world now viewed me as a racist as I know it is a false perception. I believe that this man thought he was doing good, and when the kids showed up, he realized that this was changing the dynamics of the club, and the promises that had been made to the original members. He knew they were black (or mixed races) when he made the arrangement. We DO have rights to pay for services. Would you eat at the Four Seasons with a Baby crying next to you constantly? A person Black, brown, or white expects what they pay for. These people made a mistake, and now they're paying. If there were racist there, throw them out. They might sue you, but that's how you show your principle. I've marched with the gays and the blacks and the Mexicans as an activist for many years. I've learned that if you believe in the best in people, you just might get it.

Equality you have a really good point... I posted earlier my take on this as a person who works at a pool...another problem is that this particular article left a lot of info out such as the fact that two other camps of mostly white children were also told not to return. In addition, it was after 90 min of swimming that they realized they were having issues of capacity. There are so many other variables that are going on that it would be inappropriate to automatically assume this was completely a race issue.

Correction, the other identified camp Storybook Children's Center is not mostly white, and the third camp has remained anonymous.

"It was definitely an overcrowding issue," said Joanne Rosenthal of Storybook Children's Center of northeast Philadelphia. "It was obviously more than they were used to dealing with."
Rosenthal said at least half of her 25-member group was made up of racial minorities, and their money was also returned after one visit. But she said she thought the group had been treated "extremely fairly." - Source

its all untrue. I've gone to the valley club and the pool is big but there is a small part for kids who can't go in the deep end and there were alot of young kids there that couldn't swim. the pool is usually already filled with kids. they were the last ones to join so they are the first ones to leave its that simple. It has nothing to do with the color of their skin and i bet if it was a swim club with the majority being african american and a camp of white kids came and the same things happened that this wouldnt get so big but just because their black it has to make headline news because 50 years ago blacks didnt get the same rights as whites.
at 18:51 on July 10th, 2009
you are all crazy. the valley swim club is totally right and of course they knew how many kids were coming but i guess they didnt realize that the little part of the pool that is used for kids who cant swim would get packed wit them and even more kids that already go their. it wouldnt be a big deal if white kids got kicked out its all hype
at 05:01 on July 11th, 2009
In my opinion, this probably wasn't the first summer that they gave temporary membership to external groups visiting the area. But maybe it was the first time a camping group for black kids had used the pool. The club management had not anticipated such a racist reaction from some of it's club members.
They should have banned those members, at least during the time the camping group was using the pool, but in most private clubs, the membership committee is elected or appointed by the general membership, so may be they also feared for their future.
Instead of honoring their legal contract with the camping group they rescinded and caved in to some of their racist members. They cancelled the other groups to cover their backs.
There's a history which can't be ignored. There was a time if a black kid got into a "whites only" pool, they drained it!

The fact that so many people have already jumped on the racist band wagon to make this a truly "racist" issue is nauseating. This is the first article that I have read that has actually included any quotes from the pool goers themselves.
"This has nothing to do with race," member Lori Slowinski said. "I paid my money for a private swim club…if they're gonna have it out to camps, then I want my money back."
"I was the first person to talk to the president, because the pool was overcrowded," said Flynn. "As members we have nothing to hide. There's good people here."
Daniel Veres, a 16-year old Hispanic teen who is also a member, says the entire situtation is just a misunderstanding.
How would you feel if you paid money to attend a private swim club and then suddenly, 65 children and counselors showed up? There is no reports on any of our credible new sources (Fox, NBC, etc...) to elaborate on the actual behavior of the children, only on "alleged" racism propagated by the counselors and some of the young children. Let's take a look at what one of the children attending the camp had to say.
“I heard a white lady say, ‘What are all these black kids doing here?'" 14-year-old Dymir Baylor (Camp attendee).
So let me get this strait. When referring to these children who show up at the pool, this unidentified woman, is quoted, simply because she refereed to them as BLACK? But did not Dymir Baylor just refer to her as a "WHITE LADY"?
In the vein of false quotes, let us take a second glance at what the pool president, John Duesler, really had to say.
"There was concern that a lot of kids would change the complexion ...and the atmosphere of the club." (philly.com).
To anybody who has any semblance of grammatical syntax intelligence, the use of an ellipsis in a quote allows for the writer to cunningly insert essentially any words that they deem fitting for their article, while they are quoting the interviewee. What John Duesler said was not racism, complexion has two definitions.
1) the natural color, texture, and appearance of a person's skin, esp. of the face : Marilyn Monroe had a very pale complexion, wasn't she beautiful?
2) the general aspect or character of something : Wow, that construction sight next door sure has changed the complexion of our nice quiet backyard.
Interestingly enough, it seems that Mr. Duesler could have gone in two directions with his comment, but the media, as it usually does. Has taken it in a direction for him. So please, to anybody who has any pretense of knowledge, before taking a side on this story by dusting off your old tar and feathers in the garage, or nailing together those pieces of balsa wood to make your picket sign; at least attempt and get the whole story, before we lynch John Duesler.

Peter:
I was thinking this myself. If I had one dollar for every time my black friends let the word white out of their mouths in the form of a disparaging remark, I'd be a very rich man. I am really growing tired of the double standard perpetuated by SOME people on both sides. Racism and bigotry are bad. Recently, the wrong people have been the scapegoats of this issue. Often, it's people who have done good work on behalf of civil rights causes who make the mistake of opening their mouths and saying something less than politically correct. Extremist start screaming and it's too late. And as far as Black people go, many of them need a lesson in civil rights themselves. After all, they are still preaching intolerance in the majority of their congregations and forcing their own children into the closet. They overwhelmingly voted for Proposition 8 in California. Perhaps tf they want a perfectly equal world, then they would work towards equality for others as well.
at 09:16 on July 11th, 2009
They say no good deed goes unpunished. I think this is a case of that here.
65 kids IS too much for the pool size. I have been to this pool and 2/3 of the pool is for children who are certified to swim in deeper water and 1/3 is the shallow end of the pool.
If there were 10 kids or so in the shallow end already and from what I understand another then 65 kids enter the shallow end, there is overcrowding. Period.
This becomes a safety issue because when there are too many kids in the water like that, the lifeguards are unable to see under the water and a child could become easily trapped.
It is up to the media to get the real story here. And the story is --- here is a man who tries to do good for the community all the time; here is a man who is a good father and husband; here is a man who is not used to speaking to the media; here is a man who happened to use the wrong word.
Who is really making the children cry? Is it not Ms. Wright from the daycare (that is making these accusations) whose child is in most of the video coverage. The children sound more and more couched each time I hear the news.
Media >>> CNN - NBC - ABC - CBS - FOX- MSNBC >>> it is up to you for once to give credit to a good man who misspoke rather than go for the soundbite. Soundbites never tell a full story.
Media - it is up to you to do the right thing.
Media - this man is not a criminal, yet you crucify him.
Media - it is this man who deserves an apology.
