Today it was reported by the Vancouver Police Department that Vancouver's murder record for 2009 is off to an unfortunate start.  Two seemingly unrelated murders took place in the last few days:  January 8 a senior man (aged 77), Carmelo Dibella, was found dead in his East Hastings apartment;

77-year-old Carmelo Dibella was found murdered in his apartment at 16 E. Hastings on Jan. 8, Fanning said.

He said at first police called to Dibella’s building weren’t sure what the cause of death was. But an autopsy confirmed the elderly man had been murdered, though police are not saying how he died.

"He is not known to police," Fanning said, adding investigators are being told Dibella was well-liked. "He was a very pleasant man.”

and Sunday, January 11, another senior man (aged 65) found dead in his upscale Richards highrise.

The identity of the second man is not being released until next of kin is notified, Fanning said.

The man lived in an upscale highrise at 989 Richards, on the corner of Nelson.

The details of both murders are as yet very unclear.
Walking to work today I snapped a quick photo of VPD officers sweeping the length of Richards street between Smithe and Nelson, presumably looking for some answers.
