We all read this morning about Tracey, the homeless woman who burned to death last night when trying to warm herself over a candle. I am now posting this via David Eby's blog, about the fact that there was another death which didn't make the news, which happened on Tuesday.

From Stephanie, a regular reader and plugged in DTES resident, worker and observer:

I'm sorry to report this, but there was a death Tuesday night that didn't make the media - I found out about it Wednesday night from a colleague who works for an agency that serves people with mental illness. Three people went to sleep together, and only two of them woke. Apparently the young man who died was here from up north and had only been in town four or five days.

When the weather gets as cold as this, we need to have more emergency shelters and cold weather beds open to accomodate everyone, even if they have pets as I know that some homeless don't want to spend the night in the shelters because they can't bring their pets. This needs to be changed so that no one needs to suffer a similar fate to these people described here.

There is no easy fix to the homeless problem and in this freezing weather it becomes deadly. Vancouver new mayor and council are heading in the right direction by trying to make available  temporary shelter .

Vancouver's downtown east side has many other problems that are not easy to address and the new council has their work cut out for them.

It really makes that government advertising slogan -- "Best Place on Earth" -- seem pretty hollow. This is very sad.

Every year good people die only because they are poor or mentally or physically ill in our streets.
