It's great to see initiatives like this succeed.
The Vancouver-based Tyee online publication has raised almost $15,000 in donations since it asked readers to give money to pay for provincial election coverage. The experiment has exceeded the expectations of Tyee editor David Beers, who expects contributions to hit $15,000. That amounts to double its monthly reporting budget.
The appeal comes as Canwest, the owner of the two Vancouver daily newspapers (the Vancouver Sun and Province) is cutting costs and negotiating with creditors on a CDN$3.7 billion debt.

This is not any different then the press financed by adds, or is it?
I am all for it and think this is positive, yet on the other hand it is sponsor dependency and will affect the objectivity of the news.
Wish is the dilemma of all News papers, and online news as well as Radio or TV.
Why we funded the BBC, the CBC, the ARD and NHK to have a news agency that is not dependant on sponsors or adds in order to be able to cover the news from all angles and with out out pressure from any lobby.
Mind you even those concepts have there flaws.
How do we get real news, being objective, educated and non-bias would be my personal question and goal.

Remember that ALL news is biased due to the fact that is colected and compiled by humans. No human is without bias regardless of what they may think. As long as the reader knows the writer's bias and background they can read their reports through that lens.
