Varun Gandhi, BJP’s latest Hindutva new face candidate from Pilibhit, plunged into deeper trouble Sunday night with the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government deciding to book him under the National Security Act(NSA) for inciting communal tensions which may hold him in poll time being under detention for show case cause for upto one year. Congress leader in charge of Uttar Pradesh, Digvijay Singh,“It is sad to see that Varun had been made a pawn by the BJP, RSS and VHP and his inflammatory speeches were being written by people like VHP leader Parveen Togadia to divide the voters on religious lines.”
Mr. Vijay Shankar Pandey at a press conference in Lucknow on Sunday night. He said that the National Security Act was invoked against Varun Gandhi on the basis of a report by the District Magistrate of Pilibhit.
Earlier on Sunday, an FIR was lodged in Pilibhit against Varun Gandhi charging him with attempt to murder, rioting and other offences. The FIR was filed by Pilibhit District Jailor Mukesh Arora after BJP activists fought a pitched battle with the police and laid a siege of the jail premises when Varun Gandhi courted arrest. The BJP leader is in judicial custody till Monday in connection with his alleged inflammatory speeches made in Pilibhit constituency.
Besides Varun Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh BJP President Kalraj Mishra, local MLA Sukhlal and former party MLA B. K. Gupta have been named in the FIR lodged for violation of prohibitory orders under section 144 CrPC on Saturday.
The State Election Commission has said that it is keeping a close watch on the situation in Pilibhit. Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Amrit Abhijat told reporters in Lucknow that the state commission has received a report on Saturday’s violence in Pilibhit which will be sent to Election Commission.
Meanwhile the BJP has reacted sharply to the invoking of NSA against Varun Gandhi. Party spokesperson Prakash Javdekar described this as “pure vendetta politics aimed at vote bank”. Mr. Javdekar said Varun Gandhi has been charged under this Act at a time when a TADA convict, Sanjay Dutt is seeking his election from Lucknow and many more culprits are in the fray. He said the party will react to the development in a structured way on Monday and the saffron party is confident that the voters will give a befitting reply to this.
On the other hand, the Congress said that Varun Gandhi has become trapped in a “political arrangement” between the BJP and the BSP government in Uttar Pradesh to “polarise” votes on communal lines. Congress leader Kapil Sibal said that on the one hand they are making communal statements and on the other, they are dividing the Muslim vote by imposing the NSA. He said, this is a political move and Varun Gandhi has got trapped in it.
The bail application of BJP Lok Sabha candidate Varun Gandhi, who has been booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), will be heard by a judge inside the district jail here in the wake of apprehensions on the law and order front, officials sources said today. Chief Judicial Magistrate Vipin Kumar has been asked by the District Judge to go to the jail to hear Varun's bail plea, they said. 29-year-old Varun will not be taken to the regular court premises as the district administration has apprehensions on the law and order front, they said.
