Caracas, Venezuela, 14 January 2009. Today, the Venezuelan government announced the severing of diplomatic relations with Israel due to its nonobservance of UN resolution and the systematic persecution of Palestinians in Gaza. The official communique was issued this afternoon after the expulsion of Israeli diplomats last week. It also stated that actions would be pursued at the International Criminal Court (ICC) to tie the Israeli leaders responsible of the recent sad events in Gaza. Earlier today, American news had misinformed over the continuation of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Chavez´s administration had made a clear distinction between Jews and Zionists. It also called on Jews worldwide to call on the Israeli government to stop the massacre against Palestinian civilians.

Bolivian government also broke diplomatic relations with Israel today. In a gathering with the diplomatic corp today, Evo Morales announced it would also be backing efforts to bring both the President and Prime Minister  of Israel, Israel Shimon Peres and Ehud Olmer, to the ICC.

The Bolivian president also dismissed the United Nations and its "Insecurity Council" for its "lukewarm" response to the crisis and said the general assembly should hold an emergency session to condemn the invasion.  "Considering these grave attacks against ... humanity, Bolivia will stop having diplomatic relations with Israel," Morales told diplomats in the Bolivian capital, La Paz. He also said that Shimon Peres, the Israeli president, should be stripped of
his Nobel Peace Prize for failing to stop the invasion.  Palestinian 'holocaust' Morales's move follows the decision by his ally Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, to expel Israel's ambassador in the country because of the offensive, calling it a "holocaust". Morales expelled the US ambassador from Bolivia in September after accusing him of encouraging violent protests against his government. Chavez did the same not long afterwards in "solidarity" with Morales. More than 1,000 Palestinians have now died in Israel's offensive in Gaza, around 40 per cent of whom were civilians, aid agencies and Palestinian medics say. Thirteen Israelis have also died, four from rocket fire from Gaza.

Israel does not have an embassy in Bolivia, and the nearest ambassador is situated in Peru... Morales... called for the UN to hold an emergency general session to condemn the fighting. He also said Israeli President Shimon Peres should be stripped of his Nobel Peace Prize for failing to stop the operation. The Bolivian president is known for his alliance with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who announced last week that his country would be expelling Israeli Ambassador Shlomo Cohen in response to the operation in Gaza. In a speech, Chavez dubbed the fighting a genocide and demanded that US and Israeli leaders be tried in international court. However Chavez did not say explicitly that his country would be severing ties with Israel. Foreign Ministry officials said Wednesday that Morales' announcement would not affect Israeli tourists currently traveling in Bolivia. An official announcement is planned for later in the evening.

An example to follow in this particular case.

It's curious to see these Latin American nations standing in solidarity with the Palestinians, when Arab nations which have diplomatic relations with Israel sit idly by watching, what the UN has called, genocide.

The members of the Arab League that have diplomatic relations with Israel are Egypt, Jordan and Mauritania.

Mauritania has recalled its Ambassador in protest at the Israeli Gaza incursion.

Egypt, Jordan resist calls to recall envoys over Israeli Gaza incursion

Egypt and Jordan resisted calls over the weekend to follow Venezuela and Mauritania, which have recalled their ambassadors to Israel to protest its operation in the Gaza Strip.

"Our stand is firm and well known," an Egyptian official said Saturday.

My own nation, Australia, I am ashamed to say, has simply regurgitated the same old line... "Israel has the right to defend itself..."
