Both sides claim victory in Venezuela assembly vote

Hugo Chavez's United Socialist Party won 94 out of 165 seats, at least, but the opposition took 60 seats, meaning Chavez will not be able to pass what he sees as critical reforms without the supporting votes of the other seats.

"Clearly a majority of the country has expressed itself for a change in the National Assembly," Ramon Guillermo Avelado, director of the opposition's coalition of candidates, told Venevision television. "That is a win for all Venezuelans, not just for those who voted for our candidates."

Chavez still has a congressional majority, even though no official vote tally has been released.

But the opposition says it also won 52% of the popular vote which, if verified, would provide momentum going into the 2012 presidential elections. "We are the majority," said Ramón Guillermo Aveledo, an opposition director.

Chavez's camp has also confirmed the results, saying they went for a two-thirds victory and although they were not able to reach it, they still are the majority party; opposition parties see this result as the beginning of the end for Chavez.

"This will change the political dynamics of Venezuela," said Michael Shifter, president of Washington-based think tank, the Inter-American Dialogue. "It's a respectable result which the opposition can build on for the 2012 presidential race. It shows they are back in the game and Chávez is vulnerable."

The victory of reactionary elements, subservient to US interests in the region,is a set back to all those who want an alternate to greedy capitalism, brutal dictatorship and explotation.Hugo chavez's United Socialist Party has gained more seats than the opposition, short of two-thirds majority. This proves that majority of people have more confidence in hugo Chavez. The reforms which he initiated are examplery for third world countries, especially reverse migration policy.

Stooges of neo-empire may celeberate their marginal victory, but this is not the begining of chavez's end;it is begining of their downfall,as these reactionary forces will be exposed sooner than later.

Victory for Chavez was victory of the people.Unfortunately a good many of them have been carried away by US imperialist launched false and baseless propaganda against Chavez. If people of Venezuela prefer enslavement,it is their right.
