Venezuelan polo horses died of a selenium mineral overdose

The 21 polo horses that died right before a Florida competition earlier this month were found to have been given an overdose of selenium, an ingredient in a vitamin supplement, that was made up by Franck's Pharmacy.

They mixed up a vitamin and mineral supplement that was given to the Venezuelan Lechuza Caracas polo team horses and the toxicology tests showed that the horses had 'significantly increased' levels of selenium, which is fatal in large doses.

"Signs exhibited by the horses and their rapid deaths were consistent with toxic doses of selenium," Holt said.

The horses collapsed moments before their race on April 19. They were worth about $100,000 each and belonged to Lechua Caracas owner Victor Vagas.

I feel sorry for the poor soul that made that mistake.  I hope they are kind to him/her.  I will be an awful burden to carry.

Not only were the polo ponies poisoned, they died in front of the children who were going to ride them.  I know how kindly I'd feel about someone's carelessness killing my four footed buddy.

They were world class polo ponies, they were most certainly not going to be ridden by children.  They were about to compete in a match.  Unfortunately they did die very suddenly and in front of the crowd who were about to watch the match.   It's a very, very sad accident.
