Mary McCarthy, a lovely Canadian woman who almost lived in the poverty due to US economic blockade against Cuba,  passed away last week in Havana at the age of 108.  Despite her husband left her a lot of money  in a bank of Boston, she was not able to receive it because the US Department of the Treasure had frozen the account.

McCarthy had been born in 1900 in St. John's, Newfoundland. After falling in love with a rich Spanish manager based in Cuba she moved to the island. Her husband died in 1951 and after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959 she stayed here, where she taught piano and singing.

Thanks to the actions of Canadian diplomats, during the last two years, the US Government allowed her to get 96 USD every month of the inheritance. Her case illustrates the human drama behind the 47 years-old US blockade  against Cuba, trying to force a political change.

Despite all, Mary was a very happy and optimistic woman, inspired in God and love.
