Reporting from Galle Face Green.

THE TRIUMPHANT MOOD of the Nation’s hard-fought victory over LTTE terrorism reached its zenith Wednesday (3) forenoon, as tri-service Commanders formally presented scrolls on conclusion of the War to their military chief, President Mahinda Rajapaksa during National Victory Parade celebration at Galle Face Green.

The National Victory Parade, the historic celebration of the win over LTTE terrorism that gripped <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Sri Lanka over 30 years was held to pay tribute to all War Heroes who rendered a yeoman service during the War against terrorism.

The Victory Day Parade began at the Galle Face Green-Colombo,Sri Lanka an hour ago. The tri-services and the Police are supposed to display their military prowess during this event.Few minutes ago Sri Lankan National Flag hoisted. Now Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is addressing the Nation and said that the war was against LTTE not for Tamils. Also said it is the time to stop pointless political debates & work towards the developing country.

Address by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the Victory Day Parade to pay national tribute to the Security Forces following the defeat of terrorism Galle Face Green, Colombo

June 03, 2009

I declare with great pride and dignity that I have hoisted the national flag in a single country unified under a single standard. Before me are our armed forces who astonished the world by their skill in war, discipline, efficiency and valour. It is with great expectation for the future that I address the Sri Lankan nation that is having pleasant dreams of bringing about the dawn of a great and distinguished future.

(In Tamil)

Friends This is the Motherland of us all.

We should live in this country as the children of one mother, as brothers and

sisters.

There can be no differences here. The war fought against the LTTE was not a war fought against the Tamil people.

Our Heroic Troops sacrificed their lives to save the innocent Tamil people from the clutches of the LTTE. We cannot forget the great service rendered by them.

The victory we gained defeating the LTTE, is a victory for our entire land.

It is great victory you obtained.

It is a victory for all who live in our country.

My dear Heroic Troops,

The war against the terrorists is now over.

It is now the time to win over the hearts of the Tamil people. The Tamil speaking people should be protected. They should be able to live without fear and mistrust.

That is today the responsibility of us all!

.

A victorious moment  It was a magnificent occasion. Yesterday's National Victory Parade by the Armed Forces as well as the Police and the Civil Security Force reminded the Nation again that these valiant sons and daughters of Mother Lanka had succeeded in defeating the world's most ruthless terrorist organisation, setting an example to the whole world. They displayed their might and pride at the Galle Face Green, with their Commander-in-Chief President Mahinda Rajapaksa in attendance.

The Sri Lankan Security Forces devised new strategies to outthink and outmaneuver the enemy and gain the upper hand on the battlefield. They worked in unison to frustrate the Tigers' plans to destablise the country.

The ground troops' task was made by easier as a result of the support extended by the Navy and the Air Force. .

All are expecting eagerly for the Tri Forces & Police Military Display. The Air force will have a parachute display with 30 Air Craft including Kafir & MIGs display and the navy in a procession while naval boat will simultaneously operate vessels in the seas.

This is what is Victory parade of sri lanka !!

300,000 Tamils in detention camp and Sinhalese celebration  on road !!!

Hiranya Malwatta

There is jubilation in the streets as crowds cheer, light firecrackers and wave the national flag to greet the announcement from the army chief, Gen Sarath Fonseka, that "all military operations have come to a stop".

In the old bazaar area, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other people told the BBC they were relieved.

For decades they had feared boarding buses or visiting temples, some said, for fear of bombs.

Now they hoped there would be peace with development.

The text in the above pic is incorrect Senthil.

Hiranya Malwatta

Why does the Diaspora and LTTE(abroad) conveniently forget the Muslim population of Sri Lanka?

My Muslim friends lit fire crackers in celebration, do you know? Even I did not do it.

5
Merry Rebel

And here's your another Muslim friend, don't lit fire-crackers too, but I'm very happy for Sri Lanka...

My best regards are with the Sri Lankans (Tamils, Sinhalese, Muslims, and others, all included) on this auspicious day.

2
Hiranya Malwatta

Thank you Nauman ! These sentiments are appreciated by all Sri Lankans...

3
senthil5000

No. That message is correct. Both the scenes are real and happening at the same time.

0
Hiranya Malwatta

"enthusiastic SINHALESE dance on the streets..."

incorrect. Add Moores, Malays and Burghers to it. Also upcountry Tamils and Eastern Tamils.

In the old bazaar area, Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim and other people told the BBC they were relieved.

Dont  spread lies here.Join the Parade.

President says war was against LTTE not Tamil

President Mahinda Rajapaksa speaking in Tamil at the National event said this country belongs to all. He says the war against the LTTE was not a war against Tamils. He also said "we shattered misconception that one needs a global power to destory the most ruthless terrist group"

.

3
senthil5000

Can these 300,000 Tamils join this parade ??

8
Hiranya Malwatta

Can I join the parade or go out of my house if I didn't carry my NIC in a country still under threat of bombs ? (national identity card) Ask anyone to try that and you will know.

This is also something the glorified-by-diaspora LTTE did to part of the citizens of this country. Be patient, harm done for 30 years cannot be undone in 2 weeks.

Persons living outside wouldn't mind the terrorists in the list below and likes of them going loose for sure, since they were always funded by them anyway... but the citizens of this country do mind.

Seven senior tiger errorist leaders were arrested by security forces while hiding among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in camps at Vavuniya. Among them are Karikalan, Yogy Ratnam Yogy, Lawrence Thilagar, Elleelan, V. Balakumar, Ilamperni and Thangam.

Very Inteligent & True Answer for da comment(senthil5000).Thanks very much Hiranya.

"...harm done for 30 years cannot be undone in 2 weeks."

Exactly!

2
senthil5000

// Be patient, harm done for 30 years cannot be undone in 2 weeks.

The harm done to tamils in one month has not been done in the past 30 years.  Guess who will celebrate killing 20,000 lives of a minority community ... Buddha will close his doors when the rasist crowd dance on road after the death of so many people!!

0
Hiranya Malwatta

Holmes said the 20,000 figure during the final phase was based on an unconfirmed U.N. estimate of around 7,000 civilian deaths through the end of April and added roughly 1,000 more per day after that.

Holmes said the initial figure of 7,000 deaths had been deemed far too questionable for official publication because the world body was not in a position to calculate a reliable death count. It was not really present in the battle zone, he said.

Ban expanded on this point in his speech to the General Assembly, insisting that the "final total is not yet known."

"Most of these figures do not emanate from the U.N. and most are not consistent with the information at our disposal," he said.

The United Nations believes that anywhere from 80,000 to 100,000 people died in what was one of Asia's longest modern wars, erupting in earnest in 1983 when the LTTE began to fight for a separate state for Sri Lanka's minority Tamils.

That may be one of the best comment I have read so far on Postings concerning SL.

Well said Hiranya Malwatta.

"Be patient, harm done for 30 years cannot be undone in 2 weeks."

So far the Sri Lankan government has done nothing to improve the lives of the 300,000 Tamil IDPs; the Tamils in Sri Lanka has nothing to celebrate over other than starvation, torture, rape and killings.

It is easy to say be patient when you on the side of doing the human rights violations, while it is not so easy to receive it for over 60 years, and still do even after the so called "war on LTTE" is over. The Sri Lankan government has intentionally killed Tamils civilians while ignoring the calls of the International Community.

Even now the Sri Lankan government continues to ignore the calls of international community to help with the Tamil IDPs, and still bans media into Tamil regions.

Be patient for how long ?!! There is no sign of goodwill done towards the Tamils, if the Tamils were supposedly "liberated" from LTTE, shouldn't they be the ones celebrating, not detained in the interim camps ?!! Why the Sinhalese are celebrating, while the Tamils are suffering in the detention camps with barely one meal a day?!!

Would even this celebration is the right step to help in anyway to build better relationship between the Sinhalese & Tamil communities?!! The reality in Sri Lanka is, the Sinhalese majority holds the deciding power of the elections, and the Sri Lankan government could not care less about Tamils.

The celebration party is to keep the Sinhalese chuvanism going, and to ensure that the Sinhalese remember that this government killed so many Tamils, and rooted out Tamils' aspiration to live freely in Tamil Eelam. Hence the Sinhalese will remember to reward this government with votes. That is the truth, and if you got the guts to say so in public, say it rather than playing the PR game for a genocide government.

No they cant come to da parade.Bcoz Now da Parade is over.

Mission accomplished, security forces officially tell PresidentJune 3, 2009  09:11 am

The Sri Lankan tri forces and police during the Victory Day celebrations at Galle Face Green officially convey the message to President Mahinda Rajapaksa that the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been completed and the world’s largest civilian hostage rescue operation has been successfully concluded.

Look well...the kids behind the 'twisted barbed wire' look happy!!

They know the war they were born into is no more and happy days are here to stay, and that there is hope.

You seem to enjoy putting children forward in your bid to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka. All Sri Lankans are genuinely sorry for the displaced children and we all pitch-in in our own way to help them. We all want them to have a normal childhood and a good future.

In fact, we sympathised with the children in the North, much before you started to cry for them; during the time you were funding and supporting children being made to fight a war and being used as bombs!

When children were not being treated as children, we never heard you, even in another name, complaining.

The following is an excerpt of a letter from a friend:

"I went to point pedro once with the UNICEF on an education elevating program. The childrens park there was the ultimate example for the kind of sickness VP was suffering from. The See-Saw handle was made out of an old AK47 frame. The slide was also shaped like a sea fighter boat "dvora" Now who in his right mind would create a kiddies park like that? MAKE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT. What I saw is what i have written."

Well!?!

The victory of Sri Lanka is also the victory of the 300,000 that you speak of. But, No, I don't think they can attend the celebrations for a multitude of reasons - The main reason being whatever good that would be done, you will be finding fault, like a nagging old spinster...

Victory over what?!!

The Tamils who the government was supposedly "liberating" are suffering in the detention camps with barely one meal a day, and most don't even have that. 300,000 in crowded detention camps in no sight of hope or future.

Children as young as 10 are interrogated as LTTE soldiers and simply shot.

The Sri Lankan Army torture, rapes and kills Tamils in the detention camps and the latest UN records show 13,000 Tamil IDPs disappeared in just 4 days from May 27 - May 31. As before the UN is experimenting with numbers again before making any real measures to help the Tamils IDPs.

Oxfam, Amensty and Human Rights Watch have released notes after notes to the international community to help these Tamil IDPs.

Victory over what?!! the blood shed of over 20,000 Tamil civilians killed in last few days of war? the starving Tamil IDPs? the human rights violations and war crimes of the Sri Lankan state terrorism? Victory over the killed human conscience by the Sinahlese chuvanism. that what the Sri Lankan state terrorism has to celebrate.

Two foreigners working for Care International, including a Briton, were forced to leave last month because their visas were not extended, local sources told The Times.

A Briton working for the Norwegian Refugee Council, an Ethiopian working for the Save the Children Fund, and three foreign members of staff for ASB, a German NGO, have been forced to leave.

The British head of Solidar, a consortium of NGOs, was ordered to leave within seven days in December even though he had four children at school in Sri Lanka. He managed to negotiate a short extension.

The programme manager of Zoa Refugee Care, a Dutch NGO, was expelled from Sri Lanka in September and there are problems gaining visa extensions for five of the NGO’s foreign staff.

Among those who are likely to be forced to leave in the next few months are the country heads of Oxfam and the Danish Refugee Council.

“By September or October, 60 to 70 per cent of NGO heads will have left the country,” said one aid worker.

The Government said that it was simply enforcing the new visa rules, which were announced last year. Aid workers were granted one-year visas previously, which they could renew as often as they wanted.

"Children as young as 10 are interrogated as LTTE soldiers and simply shot. "

You forgot to give your source. yesterday "they were recruited by Karuna as child soldiers" in case some other War comes up some day... today "they are shot".

Provide the source please.

2
Tamiya

You the most pretending creature in the world.

Have you ever tried to to bring media into the IDPs camps to find out the truth?!!

You asked for source and here is your source.

Source: News of the World (www.newsoftheworld.co.uk) [Title - Hidden from the world.. innocent captives of terror]

The News of the World sends award winning reporter Dan-McDougall to reveal truth about Sri-Lankas secret refugee camps

In the Pulmoddai camp, children wave from behind the barbed wire fence.

A child no more than two-years-old toddles naked towards the razor wire imprisoning her and her family. Terrified of retribution, parents pull the child away. Many of the refugees are dressed only in rags and tattered clothing. Chicken pox and skin diseases are sweeping through the camp and hepatitis is a growing problem because of poor sanitation.

Around the perimeter, women gather at hastily-constructed water pumps but only one is functioning properly.

Our attempts to interview the detainees through the wire were met with angry threats of imprisonment and deportation by guards.

Two Tamil women shouted "help us" to our translator as we were pushed away from the perimeter fence. Sickened by the violent attempts to stop our access, the charity worker who spoke to us spat out the truth of what was happening here.

He works for ZOA-a non-governmental organisation which helps set up wells and food distribution systems in some of the world's worst trouble spots. He told us the creation of the camp and dozens like it was causing grave concern.

Hiranya Malwatta

errrrrr and that's the evidence for the "10 year old children being shot" - gee thanks !

3
Hiranya Malwatta

And BTW, still no link ! where is the link for the above story? i typed the website name given, but whoa ! nothing like that on that site....!

3
Hiranya Malwatta

Vellupillai Prabhakaran is dead ! So are the other LTTE leaders. Vengeful words, hatred spreading, malicious words against one race and various stories without evidence or a source cannot bring the dead terrorists back to life.

5
sudharaka

@Tamiya
Your sick Goebellsian tactics failed to prevent your chief megalomaniac from biting the mud in the mangroove marsh. So do something productive rather than repeating the (late) LTTE rhetorics, since you wont get anywhere with those.

2
Tamiya

I could not care less about your opinion sudharaka as for all other Sinhalese extremists celebrating over the blood of the Tamils killed.

The Tamils's need for Tamil Eelam is only being assured by what the Sri Lankan government is doing even after the demise of LTTE, hence only proving the validity of the arms struggle and the continued need for the seperation Tamils regions into independence - Tamil Eelam.

Prabhakaran might be gone, but the need for Tamils' rights and freedom still exist and will exist until Tamils in Sri Lanka attain Tamil Eelam. The current behavior of the Sri Lankan state terrorism is the main supporting argument for this need.

Whatever you want to call it, sick or goebellsian tactics or whatever to insult Tamil's desire to live freely in Sri Lanka, I don't care. Tamils have to live freely in Sri Lanka, not as servants and slaves to Sinhalese as the Tamil children are being taken away from the IDPs camps; not as rape victims and toture victims to Sri Lankan Army; not as money making revenue stream to the Sri Lankan government to go beg around the world for aid, and then turn around sell the aid to Tamils IDPs at high cost.

All genocide governments celebrated victory right after their carnage, but always will be sought after for what they did. So enjoy while you can.
