MUSSOORIE: Feb 28

The great arc rally consisting of vintage cars from 1935-70 and 15 different countries concluded with the visit to Historic George Everest House at Hathipaon today around Noon. The Vintage beauties shining in pristine glory arrived at a hotel in Mussoorie yesterday. The cars after some maintenance left for their final destination George Everest House one by one. Noël and BD Stebby driving Automatic Mercedes Benz LGM 777 G from Holland said that it was a very exciting, tiring and humbling experience to Reach George Everest House the final destination of the Great Arc Rally.Noel also said that he would love to Journey in Himalayas after this. Conrad Birch the spokes person and the brainchild behind organizing this rally said that he got the idea from the book by John Keay and was fascinated by it and so in honour of Commemorating the bicentennial anniversary of the “Great Arc” survey done during the 19th century that led to mapping of the country, much of which is associated with Survey of India headquartered in Dehradun and at George Everest House in Mussoorie they planned this Vintage rally in which participants, mostly from Norway, Germany, Switzerland and other European countries agreed to join hands from Kanyakumari to Mussoorie roughly a distance of 2400 meters in straight line and 5000 meters otherwise. Conrad was pleased that the cars and crew could complete this arduous journey in 21 days. Conrad says that this indo-British venture is in honour of the George Everest and William Lambton who and their Indian Counterparts who made the calculation of the great arc.

Geoffrey from England, was delighted to be in India as this was his first time in India. Sharing his experience he said exclusively to Garhwal Post that the truck drivers have trouble with their hooter, First you hoot them then they hoot you saying we know, then you hot them saying that you are overtaking them then they hoot you back saying no problem, then you hoot them saying thank you then they hoot back again saying you no problems at all for him this knowledge has been revelations he says with a grin.Alexandar the engineer of the team said hat finally the site of George Everest house was filled with delight he said that The Journey has been hard but exciting and adventurous.

Dina Bennnete from Colorado USA a team member said that Mussoorie was a lovely place to arrive too. She loved the clear Blue sky and said that clean air was lovely at Mussoorie.Speaking of her journey she said that Indian are lovely people and they have smile on their face wherever you go which is refreshing. She told GP that the five female members team have also bonded well in the whole trip along with the vehicles who have made it this far. Conrad Birch also 9informed that the next vintage expedition will be in Japan hopefully next year.

Conrad Birch the spokesperson and organiser of the Great Arc Rally which began from Kanyakumari and culminated at Hathipaon, George Everest House was delighted to make this trip but also sadden by the dilapidated condition of the heritage building Everest House. Conrad said on reaching Everest House that govt could and should do more to maintain the Everest House. After all it was here where the calculations of the great Arc Survey were undertaken with George Everest and William Lambton.Conrad said that the whole adventure is an initiative of Kalypso Adventure, a Kochi-based adventure tourism company in active assistance from UK-based adventure travel company ‘ROARR’.The Great Arc, a new concept in motoring events has been launched by ROARR, organizers of the Jewel of India and the Himalaya Classic Rally. The Great Arc pays homage to William Lambton and George Everest, two intrepid surveyors who mapped India in the largest and longest geographical survey ever carried out. Taking nearly 50 years the two men and hundreds of Indians fought their way through the jungles, across the plains, up the mountains and over the rivers of India to deliver the definitive survey of India. Its 1600 miles of inch perfect survey cost more lives than most contemporary wars, and involved equations more complex than any in the pre-computer age. He further added that Hailed as ‘one of the most stupendous works in the history of science’, it was also one of the most perilous.

The Great Arc Rally took up the spirit of the Survey by asking competitors to drive in as straight a line as possible from the tip of India at Cape Comorin to Hathiopaon near Mussoorie, Everest’s home in the clouds where he spent many years calculating the results of the survey. The Rally followed a route up the spine of India which required ingenuity, persistence, stamina and a strong dose of luck to complete. Conrad added further that the rally was self funded and the cost for 21 days was £14,850 to enter a vehicle and two drivers. Conrad was pleased that they could visit the place form where the Curvature of Earth.
