Vladimir Putin is Hip With Russian Youth, On Stage
Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin made a brief appearance on stage in an abandoned Moscow factory building. In the midst of hip-hop swaying, he lend support for the hip hop music, saying it added Russian "charm".
He stressed the importance of health and physical strength needed to be able to break dance.
“These youngsters who work in this art in our country – they bring unique Russian charm. Street rap may be a little bit rough, but it contains social meaning – raising social problems. Graffiti becomes a real elegant art. Break dance is something special. It is really a promotion of a healthy lifestyle. It’s hard to imagine break dance being combined with alcohol or drugs. When people perform with acrobatic elements, it really calls for respect.”
Putin, wearing a turtleneck sweater and jacket, went on stage to present awards to participants in "Battle for Respect", a hip-hop music contest run by Muz TV, a Russian rival to MTV.
"It would have been cool to record a joint track with Vladimir Putin because he is a legendary man and our idol," sang rapper Zhigan who won the contest. "Let's make so much noise in his honour that the whole world can hear."
A presenter told the audience of about 100 young rappers in a makeshift television studio in an abandoned Moscow factory building that he wanted "smiles to stay on your faces throughout the evening".
Putin, who stepped down as president last year, remains Russia's most popular and powerful politician. Most Russians believe he will run for President again in 2012.
..."He communicates to all social groups. Hip-hop culture is very popular and youths from all corners of our country are fans of this culture," Peskov said.

It is unusual, but like Putin stated:
"Street rap may be a little bit rough, but it contains social meaning - raising social problems."
And isn't that what a government is supposed to do, address social problems?
