"Hi. I'm Mark and I just, er rediscovered Now Public. I've been in Galveston Texas for the last month ever since it was legal to come back in after Ike hit. I've been here and using Twitter mostly to update and I'm gonna be here indefinitely. And I'll be update, uploading stories, on Ike survivors. I'm living now with an Ike survivor that didn't evacuate and I'm from New Orleans so I can relate. It's kinda disjoint at the way I'm coming into this. I wish I had known about NowPublic a month ago when I got here but I'm sure... I'm uploading pictures and all this will make sense after a while. But I'll fill you all in. But um... And Galveston's fine, it's beautiful. It's not like New Orleans after Katrina. There's fast food places open and the stores are open. The Red Cross Salvation Army have left and now it's just a matter of working hard and rebuilding it. OK let me know if there's anything I didn't cover. All right. Bye."

markmayhew, I like this story. It's good stuff.
Thanks for the updates Mark - it's great to have someone on the ground in Galveston keeping us informed as to how the rebuild is going.

thanks for the positive comments, just think...this audio is only of me, just wait until I get some Ike survivors to tell their stories.

Looking forward to hearing the stories of Ike survivors first-hand - I think it's especially important not to forget about disasters like Katrina and Ike after the 'storm' has settled, as it were. Being privy to the experiences of residents there goes a long way in ensuring that we don't forget and repeat our mistakes.
