Here is a link to the first voice report on this shooting.

" I'm Sergei Blair. I'm reporting from North Philadelphia between 17 Dauphin Street. What we are hearing right now, and this is an update on the first officer shooting here in North Philadelphia. What we are learning right now is that one officer has been shot and killed and another one has been injured and is currently at Temple University Hospital for further treatment.

Also his name is Michael Mc Donald. He's been with the Philadelphia police now for thirty years. I believe he is in his eight year on the Philadelphia police force. He is a 30 year old police officer and has three children.

One suspect has been killed and another one is in custody at this time.

The suspect's body, as I am learning from news station WPDI base in Philadelphia, channel 6, is that a suspect's body has been found at Dolphin Street, near 17 Dauphin where the shooting took place.

The shooting took place in between the Colorado Street and Dauphin.

So as recap, a Philadelphia police officer is dead and another one is in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. One suspect is dead and another is currently in custody.

I'm Sergei Blair, reporting from 17 Dauphin Street for NowPublic.

sblair, I like this story. It's good stuff.

Here's more from Philly.com:

McDonald, who was single, was a member of the department's elite highway patrol unit.

Officers responding to McDonald's call encountered a suspect at 17th and Dauphin Streets and engaged in a gun battle, police said. Officer Richard Bowes, 36, a 12-year veteran who also a member of the highway patrol, was wounded in the leg.

The alleged gunman fell in the 2300 block of North 17th Street and was pronounced dead on the scene. A large-caliber handgun was recovered, police said.

There were conflicting accounts about what led to the shooting, and Deputy Commissioner Richard J. Ross Jr. said it was unclear. Police took several witnesses into custody.

McDonald was pronounced dead at 2:08 p.m. He was shot in the upper body, apparently above his protective Kevlar vest. The condition of Bowes was not immediately known; authorities say he was shot in the hip or leg.

McDonald was driving a patrol car, while Bowes and many of the responding officers rode motorcycles. The highway patrol has with a wide spectrum of responsiblities, including some drug investigations.

A report from NBC also stated that the police were looking for a burgundy 1995 Buick with the Pennsylvania tag GVH 7189.
