The Spanish police are investigating a group of people believed to be using voodoo curses to force Nigerian women into prostitution.

Some of the women are said to be minors.

A black magic sect which has been using voodoo curses to force Nigerian women into prostitution is being investigated by Spanish police.

Police have carried out raids in Spain's major cities against members of the so-called voodoo cult, which carried out rituals and black magic to keep the women, some of them minors, under control.

So far 23 people across the country have been detained.

Police say the cult brought the women into the country with false promises of legal employment but forced them to work as prostitutes.

Spanish police said Thursday they had detained 23 people across the country who are suspected of using voodoo curses to force Nigerian women into prostitution in Spain.

The women were recruited in Nigeria with false promises of legal employment and then illegally brought to Spain where they were forced to work as prostitutes, police said in a statement.

Police said the ring carried out "voodoo rituals and black magic to frighten the women and keep them always under control with the threat of 'destroying their souls" or 'making them crazy'."

The cult had brought the women by bus and truck to Libya and from there had taken them to Italy by boat and brought overland to Spain.

11 people in Netherlands accused of using voodoo curses to force up to 150 Nigerian girls into prostitution in Europe were put on trial earlier this month and the trial was adjourned until later this year.

Voodoo is a powerful "religion". I read a story where a child is deemed to be born cursed and the parents will turn away from their own babies....

Can you please add the tag womens rights to this? Thanks.

It is a powerful religion Sara Star. Nigeria is one of the countries I lived at as a child and a lot of people do turn to voodoo for guidance and to help them with problems they may have. Some people also use voodoo to take revenge from those who may have done wrong to them. And yes, there are some babies who have been disowned because the child was thought to be cursed.

Thanks for letting me know about the tag. I'll add it.
