"Vote for me,Elect Me and I will add new Taxes in return ", --Only in Canada
Only in Canada can you actually run a campaign based on an issue of actually adding a new tax ( Dion's carbon Tax) on to already taxed upto to the neck public and still hope to win.
I was born in India and kinda grew up enough to see the modus operanda untill I was 16 and came to Canada about 20 years ago.Let me tell you what happens in a country like India when you start talking about raising even Gas prices or any other commodity for that matter , let alone adding a new tax; people throw you out (literally) even before you can even implement your thoughts on paper.
Today even Gas prices in India are cheaper than Canada ( Unlike canada,India has no oil resources).
Here Stephane Dion says we are going to add more taxes if we win and we take it and even vote for him so he can make his vision of screwing us a reality.Remember the GST story by the Liberals; it was supposed to be just for a little time so we can pay down our debt. It stayed at 7 percent and hundreds of billions were collected but guess what they forgot to pay our debt, until the conservatives came in power , two decades after the fact and cut the GST and paid down a little debt.
Unreal ! no one says anything."what can we do" is prevailent in our society.
Let's see now, the economy is in a slump, people are losing their homes to foreclosures (not just because of bad loans but also for other reasons), people are going hungry because they can barely pay for the gas to go to work and the politicians want more money so they can grow their bureaucracies some more, oh yeah don't forget they want pay raises also that the people won't even be allowed to vote on.
Don't even get me started on our leaders doing nothing about rising commodity prices, grocery prices are at 200% or more from a year and a half ago.what's next food riots.
No, I don't think I want to increase taxes for all those people that are already having a hard time making it to tomorrow.
We been fear mongered to Death. And we are civilized.Gimme a break.
Only in Canada can we be this submissive.

All countries in the world should follow this great idea of adding a new Carbon Tax. We need that in the world to act against the global warming. Only people, like Sarah Palin don't believe humans are responsible for global warming.
Just look what is happening. More hurricanes, more flooding, melting ice, dangered species in nature and so on.

By talking about him, you only feed his fire. Ignore everything up to actual concrete action. No election has been called yet, there is no need to help or hurt his campaign. He can do a fair enough job of that on his own.

Milieunet Carbon tax is a good idea or not is debatable.Problem is Liberals have a track record of collecting money under all kind of pretenses (like GST) and not using the money for the purpose.Thats my issue. So carbon tax money will not be used for environment either, thats my issue.

sehgalviveka,
Lots of economists including Jeff Sachs think a carbon tax is a good idea until you can get an effective cap and trade market in place. As far as the GST it was imposed by the Conservatives is you'll remember. That said most economists agree that taxing consumption is a better way to tax than income. If Harper had been smart he would have reduced income taxes and left consumption taxes alone.
What you're also leaving out here (maybe you haven't read the plan) is that Dion has stated that the carbon tax will be revenue neutral. To ensure this there will be an annual audit by the Auditor General who we all no is no friend of either party. We also know that one trait that Dion has that people in general admire him for is his integrity, so you know that he will work towards this.
The plan has lots of stuff in there which validates this including reducing income taxes, tax subsidies for the poorest and accelerated write downs for business. He has also shown willingness to listen to critics as can be witnessed by his recent adoption of aid for truckers.
We know the economy is important but the impact of global warming will be much more devastating. If you don't like this idea then propose another. NO politician wants to propose taxes if you have a better idea I'm sure all of the parties would pick it up.
Where has Dion has erred in his green plan is making the carbon tax the focus -- what he should have done is called the plan the green economy and focused on the positive side of the ledger -- creating green jobs, improving education and R&D and using this as a way to accelerate commercialization of green technologies and so on.
We have difficult problems to solve and having a leader in power who is more interested in government that does nothing to establish a framework to get us where we need to be competitive (that's Harper by the way) is the wrong direction.

Kferday
just so you know they have imposed this tax provinicially in BC ( you know the province with the highest gas prices in the country because of it ) and now the liberals are losing ground in polls there ( I dont think they are very enthusiastic for voting for this tax federally as well, wonder why they don't get it , they could be broke today but it will be good for the world....not very smart of them het Kferday) gimme a break you wanna talk green talk to the chinese or other countries where once city pollutes more than our country , and I gotta pay more taxes.I am already taxed to death dont want any more.
sorry
